This book presents and discusses the logic and method of social science research adapted mainly for instruction at Arab universities and for research in Arab countries, but with applicability beyond the region. It illustrates major concepts and methods pertaining to research with examples of previous studies carried out in the Arab world and with exercises using Arab Barometer and other datasets. The book situates itself between a regular methods textbook and an annotated list of major concepts and methods, and includes an introduction, three chapters, and four appendices.
-- ; Taking as a reference the natural opposition between the representations of childhood constructed from liberalism and conservatism, present in school texts, this paper seeks to establish how the pact made between the reds and the blues that gave rise to the National Front, led to a new way of assuming childhood. The novelty of this process lies in the attempt to reconcile the divergent representations of childhood constructed by these two political collectivities. From these coordinates, the fundamental purpose of the presentation is to show how the synthesis between a liberalism that always identified in the protagonism of the citizen the foundation on which the political subject should be defined and a conservatism radically inspired by the forms of indirect democracy took place.
"This innovative textbook demystifies the subject of world history through a diverse range of case studies. Each chapter looks at an event, person, or place commonly included in comprehensive textbooks, from prehistory to the present and from across the globe ? from the Kennewick Man to gladiators and modern-day soccer and globalization ? and digs deeper, examining why historians disagree on the subject and why their debates remain relevant today. By taking the approach of 'unwrapping the textbook,' David Eaton reveals how historians think, making it clear that the past is not nearly as tidy as most textbooks suggest. Provocative questions like whether ancient Greece was shaped by contact with Egypt provide an entry point into how history professors may sharply disagree on even basic narratives, and how historical interpretations can be influenced by contemporary concerns. By illuminating these historiographical debates, and linking them to key skills required by historians, World History through Case Studies shows how the study of history is relevant to a new generation of students and teachers."--

This article critiques current undergraduate economics textbooks' treatment of externalities. Despite a tremendous scholarly pushback since 1920 to Pigou's path-breaking writings, modern textbook authors fail to synthesize important critiques and extensions of externality theory and policy. The typical textbook treatment (a) does not distinguish pecuniary from technological externalities, (b) is silent about the invisible hand's unintended and emergent consequences as a positive externality, (c) emphasizes negative relative to positive externalities, (d) ignores Coase's critique of Pigouvian tax "solutions," and (e) presents policy "solutions" to negative externalities that ignore inframarginal external benefits that may render "solutions" harmful to social welfare. Aside from attention to "The Coase Theorem" (excerpted from only about four pages of Coase's voluminous writings), the typical textbook today discusses little of the scholarly critique that emerged in response to Pigou's anti-market polemic. Imparting economics students with Pigouvian biases is potentially harmful to both them and society because it leaves them ill-prepared to critically assess policy proposals that are alleged to solve externality problems.
AbstractIran, with the world's youngest population, needs to pay utmost attention to the content of textbooks used to instruct at the primary and secondary school levels because, in many parts of Iran (except for some affluent parts of the capital), the textbooks are the only reference books for the teachers and students. If these textbooks reflect gender-bias in their language and illustrations, especially at lower levels of education, future generations who are the hope for sustainable development in Iran as a developing country can be affected by the pictures of gender stereotypes and the bias generated through these textbooks. In this article, it is argued that due to the religious and social context of Iran, there is still great emphasis on the social theory of differences between men and women. This social role theory in Iran, together with mores and cultural values, leave no room for other versions of femininity and masculinity to emerge in the social sphere of Iranian society.

Currently published leadership textbooks do not adequately cover important leadership theories that have emerged in the last ten years such as "Emotions and Leadership", "Authentic Leadership and Positivie Organizational Scholarship", "Identity Theory", "Sense-Making and Knowledge Management", and Persuasion and Influence Tactics". As a result followers of these models are forced to use course-packs and single-theory books. This textbook will meet the needs of this market by covering their favorite theories along with other traditional leadership theories. The textbook will be written in the conversational style preferred by today's students. It will be concise enough to be used in a case or course-pack oriented course, or in a module graduate program.

An extensive study of the representations of Europe in history textbooks has been conducted with regards to Italian lower secondary school (Pingel 1994, 2000, 2003a, 2003b; Cajani 2003). These studies have included considerations upon the history of European integration, although this was not their exclusive topic. To date, however, few pieces of research have addressed how the history of European integration is dealt with in Italian textbooks for upper secondary school (Accardo, Baldocchi 2004; Challand 2009). The present paper examines how curricula and textbooks portray the integration process in upper secondary school. It focuses on the position they attribute to Italy in different phases and the extent to which they use recent findings of historiography.
; This paper takes up case studies from history of education that refer to the function of textbooks and to the protagonists responsible for their production and publication. It deals with educational and political controversies around two textbooks, which ended with a different outcome. In both examples there appears a paradox of curricular and extracurricular claims in regard to textbooks, which calls for a prioritization of functions and for a decision with respect to interpretative authority.
Leonardo Casalino, The polemic on school textbooks in Italy. An interesting and significant episode in Italian historical debate revolves around the polemic on history textbooks employed in Italian schools. Representatives of the Alleanza Nazionale - a political group formed out of the neo-Fascist Movimento Sociale Italiano - have made the accusation that textbooks currently used are hardly objective in their presentation of Fascism or the policies of Silvio Berlusconi. They demand a totally different approach. The Regional Council of Latium and other local governments controlled by the Centre-Right have voted resolutions along these lines. Such initiatives, seen as attempts at censure, have caused some strong reactions within Italian public opinion.
