Dans le passé, la théorie des structures sociales et économiques a été vulgarisée et comprise de la façon suivante : le développement spontané de presque toutes les sociétés humaines faisait passer chacune d'elles par presque toutes les étapes de formation. Mais, très récemment, la science soviétique a reconnu que les sociétés recevant des stimuli de l'extérieur rattrapaient en quelque sorte celles qui les avaient devancées dans leur développement historique. Bien qu'aucune société ne se soit développée de façon absolument spontanée et qu'elle ne soit pas capable d'assimiler organiquement des stimuli extérieurs sans avoir été préparée d'abord à une telle assimilation par son propre développement interne, il a toujours existé des cas aussi bien de développement « principalement spontané » que de développement « principalement stimulé », provenant de diverses conditions géographiques naturelles et de causes historiques concrètes.
La voie du développement « principalenent spontané » a conduit les sociétés traditionnelles presque invariablement à un retard historique et l'apologie de cette voie (africanisme, relativisme culturel dans l'anthropologie occidentale) a conduit à admirer un tel retard. Cependant, la voie du développement « principalement stimulé » qui a fait sauter une ou deux étapes de formation aux sociétés traditionnelles, insuffisamment préparées par leur évolution toujours été lourde de conséquences.
