Lange tijd werd het zo voorgesteld dat middeleeuwse kooplieden verdoemd waren omdat zij winst nastreefden. Pas met de Italiaanse Renaissance en het protestantisme zou er bevrijding gekomen zijn en zou men volop winst hebben mogen maken zonder zich schuldig te moeten voelen.
