Abstract
Following a brief look at New Zealand cabinet changes in 2003, attention turns to issues of national political importance. Labour's political strength is seen as a function of good economic conditions, while economic growth & foreign policy merged as a major theme. New Zealand parted company with Australia & the UK with regard to support for the US invasion of Iraq & found itself excluded from Australian-US free trade negotiations. Immigration received some attention in 2003 as did the removal of the Privy Council in London from its role as court of final appeal in the New Zealand justice system. The Court of Appeal's judgment that the Maori Land Court could consider claims from traditional Maori organizations to ownership of the seabed & foreshore generated quite a stir. 1 Table, 5 References.
