Abstract

Trends in public concerns from 1935 to 1984 are traced, based on the Gallup Poll question on the most important problem facing the country, which provides a barometer of both short-term fluctuations & long-term trends. Most notable of the secular trends are: (1) the long-term decline in economic concerns from 1946 to the mid-1960s, & their return to top position by the mid-1970s; (2) the decline of foreign affairs as a concern after withdrawal from Vietnam, & the failure of other foreign policy issues to replace worries over Vietnam; & (3) the sharp rise & fall of civil rights concerns from the mid-1950s to the late 1960s.
