Abstract

Americans live in a culture dominated by fear: fear of crime & fear of those with criminal intent. As long as this culture of fear is perpetuated, it will be nearly impossible for any grassroots movement to challenge the prison industry. If a movement of this type is to succeed, it will need to mobilize social forces with such power that the psychosocial injuries, propagated by the culture of fear, can be repaired.
