Abstract

Based on social indicators from the "European Quality of Life Survey" which compared 28 European countries in 2003, the article examines to what extent there are similarities & differences between Turkey & the rest of Europe with respect to objective living conditions & subjective well-being. A second comparative analysis based on the 1999 European Values Study shows to what extent political orientations differ. A comparison with Germany as a country whose relationship to western culture was similarly debated in post-war years then examines to what extent political orientations are cultural constants rather than malleable adaptations to historically changing conditions. The German example shows that political orientations changed rapidly with the country's integration into the western world. This is interpreted as an indication that Turkey would become more European to the extent that it is integrated into the European Union. 4 Tables, 46 References. Adapted from the source document.
