Abstract
"Although the NS-regime tried to eliminate any possibility for prisoners of concentration camps to keep an identification via gender and social or ethnic origin, prisoners still had hidden leeways for action to keep their individuality. The paper presents these leeways which ran mainly by identification via 'gender'. Men remain men for other male prisoners. They can tolerate beating without loosing their honour because the guards degraded themselves to an animalistic level by their beating. Conflicts among male prisoners were solved manly. Women remain women by their ability to cope with the situation and to endure privations. The different gender and their characteristics are a main strategy for survival and help to keep one's identity and honour." (publisher's description)
