Difficulties experienced by regional integration movements in both the developed & underdeveloped parts of the globe are leading theorists to a reexamination of theories of integration previously proposed. Particular consideration is given to the relevance of the theories to integration movements in the Third World where the processes of both nation-building & integration are being undertaken simultaneously. The internal & environmental prerequisites to integration are explored for Third World countries which are both open & heavily penetrated systems. The establishment of a diplomatic zone or "theater" with defined rules of behavior is a necessary prerequisite to the creation of a viable, bounded integration area. AA.

The post-Cold War period witnessed a spurt in regional integration and regional trading arrangements. India's attempt at regional integration with Afro-Asian countries during the early years of independence had been without much success. The economic reforms in 1991 and the resultant liberalization and opening of the economy, and the reshaping of its foreign policy have thrown open the floodgate of its Asianism. This article discusses the trend towards regional integration with the end of Cold War and argues that the Look East policy is the byproduct of India's attempt at regional economic integration with East and Southeast Asian countries. The policy is also used by India as one of the means for solving multiple predicaments in its Northeastern region.

Regional integration in South Asia remains a distant priority for South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation countries. In the area of services, this region offers a great potential. This article aims to examine the opportunities that exist in services and analyses the constraints that impede regional integration in services in South Asia. It highlights the gamut of scope and benefits that can be accrued from this regional integration in services provided certain constraints such as regulatory, infrastructural, institutional and business-related constraints are addressed adequately. The article argues that the region throws up several political and economic challenges which merit immediate attention to further the cause of integration of services. It identifies intraregional mobility, trade facilitation and investment opportunities as the key drivers of regional integration. Sectors such as tourism and health care have huge potential. Intervention from governments of all member countries in specific sectors like tourism is crucial to realize the goal. The article argues for an open, broad-based, flexible regional services agreement, which takes a liberal approach to services integration. It is important that regulatory harmonization, liberal investment policies, willingness towards free movement of natural persons and political will of high order are encouraged to seek such integration in services.
Regional integration in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is crucial for its further economic development and, more importantly, its structural transformation away from agriculture towards higher value-added activities, such as manufacturing and services. Yet there are many paths towards greater integration, some of which are easier than others. In order to gain insights into how regional integration is occurring in SSA, determine impediments to it, and develop recommendations for how the World Bank and other development agencies can help further facilitate it, the World Bank commissioned a set of political economy of regional integration studies covering sector analyses of agriculture, financial services, professional services, trade facilitation, and transport. This report summarizes the findings from the sector studies and suggests recommendations for further efforts in these areas by the World Bank and other development agencies. In a comparative context, the findings of the studies suggest cautious optimism for regional integration efforts in sub-Saharan Africa. Economic integration is more likely to succeed when it occurs alongside regional attempts at improving political stability and or developing joint infrastructure.

Auch das europäische Integrationsprojekt basiert mit dem Binnenmarktprogramm und den vertraglich abgesicherten vier Freiheiten, für Handel, Kapital, Personen und Dienstleistungen, auf dieser Grundidee. Im Rahmen der EU wird dies noch durch die Währungsunion ergänzt. Aber an der These der wohlfahrtssteigernden Wirkung des Freihandels gibt es vermehrt Kritik. Die Finanz- und Eurokrisen haben zusätzlich die Debatten über die Erweiterung und Vertiefung der EU einschließlich der Europäischen Währungsunion verstärkt. Auch wirft das geplante transatlantische Freihandelsabkommen grundsätzliche Fragen von Grenzen der ökonomischen Integration auf. Zu diesen Themen fand vom 10. bis 12. Juli 2015 eine wissenschaftliche Tagung unter der Leitung von Wolfgang Quaisser in der Akademie für Politische Bildung Tutzing statt. Einige der dort vorgestellten Vorträge werden hier veröffentlicht.

After a general analysis of the impact of Thailand's economic integration within ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations), this paper will look at the evolution of regional integration mouvance in South East Asia, the issues concerning convergence and divergence of the member states, and the perspectives for 2010. At the same time it will attempt to answer the following questions: what would be the most effective trade integration, the best regional investment, and the best areas for monetary, financial, political, institutional and social regional co-operation agreements, and how interesting, at the end of the day, is ASEAN integration for Thailand?

In der EU hat Irland aufgrund seines wirtschaftlichen Aufschwungs und der hohen Direktinvestitionen auf sich aufmerksam gemacht. Die Autorin untersucht, welche internen (Standortfaktoren) und externen Rahmenbedingungen (europäische Integration) eine erfolgreiche Anwerbung von Direktinvestitionen ermöglicht haben. Von besonderem Interesse ist, inwieweit andere Mitgliedsländer der EU die Strategie Irlands übernehmen können. Nach der Ermittlung eines theoretischen Analyserahmens wird dieser auf Irland angewendet. Dabei sind die Direktinvestitionszuflüsse durch die regionale Integration zu erklären, jedoch nur in Kombination mit den irischen Besonderheiten. Insbesondere die langfristige Ausrichtung der wirtschaftspolitischen Maßnahmen auf die MNU haben dazu beigetragen.
