How does a personality characteristic such as self-esteem become translated into political convictions? How do individual differences in self-esteem affect who becomes a politcal activist and a political leader? These are among the major questions addressed in this study, the first of its kind to be based on large-scale samples of both political laders and ordinary citizens. Drawing on the voluminous research of social psychologists on self-esteem and integrating the dynamic theories of Freud and his followers with the functional and social learning approaches, Professor Sniderman advances new theories to account for the complex connections between personality, political beliefs, and political leadership. In 1972, the American Political Science Association gave Professor Sniderman's original work in this field, on which this book is based, the E. E. Schattschneider Award for the best doctoral dissertation in the field of American government and politics. La réorganisation de leur travail s'est traduite par la dépolitisation progressive de leur activité et finalement par la bureaucratisation de leur « métier ». A partir d'une enquête à la fois ethnographique et archivistique sur le siège du PS, les auteurs montrent comment l'identité professionnelle des permanents socialistes est peu à peu devenue inconciliable à leur identité militante, faisant passer ceux-ci d'un rôle de militants professionnels à une position inconfortable de salariés encartés.

International audience ; This article analyzes the relation between Godwin (1756-1836), Republican and author of Politcal Justice (1793), and French philosophers, particu- larly Helvétius. Both Godwin and Helvétius were in favour of a political understanding of the theory of knowledge as opposed to an intellectual treatment of policy. They con- tinually questioned the links between policy, history of the human understanding, and moral science from the perspective of the question of education. After the September Massacres (1792), Godwin's thought changed radically and began to revolve around the notion of perfectibility. The final disagreement marked a distinction between French reformers, who advocated state control, and English writers, influenced by dissent and reformation, who held the idea of perfectibility. ; Cet article examine le rapport de Godwin (1756-1836), écrivain anglais «jacobin», auteur de Political Justice (1793), aux philosophes français, Helvétius en particulier. An exploration of how two types of groups positively & negatively affect innovation-driven economic growth -- one through coordinated private market activities, & the other through political processes or collusive actions. The reciprocal effects of growth on the groups that affect it are examined to determine if those groups contributing to growth will have stronger or weaker impacts than those that retard economic progress. This question is examined first in context of an isolated economy, & then in a broader competitive context, where innovation is affected by spillover effects on supplies, trade restrictions, & migration opportunities, & where politcal entities vie for mobile resources. In this environment, innovations occurring in one economy can shift economic relationships in others. A global, increasingly positive net effect of the groups impacting economic progress is predicted. In Group Behavior and Economic Growth: Some Questions, Eirik G. Furubotn (U of Texas, Arlington) commends the general discussion of coalitions but criticizes the conclusions drawn. The use of intuitive judgment rather than explicit argument is criticized. The growth phenomena is too selective & implies indefinite acceleration, & no alternative models are presented of how social behaviors affect it. This thesis deals with the involvement of women in conflict resolution in Congo brazzaville. It revaeals the various mechanisms through which the Congolese elite Women helped solne socio-politcal conflicts in the country. And it emphasizes the social role of Congolese Women in the struggle for national emancipation. Successively studing sociogenesis conflict and networks of different political actors through associations supported by Ong and finaly the occupation of public space. This theis reports on the social logic of societal transformation and male domination in its forms institutionalized and objectified and incorporated. This thesis addresses the question of relationship between societies and their territory, in connection with the development of a Biosphere Reserve targeting the protection of cedar forests. The cedar has been intensively exploited since ancient times, today only a few residual forests remain. The protection of these forests came with the late creation of nature reserves at the national level. In an institutional context marked by the weakness of the State, this conservation tool remains dominated by environmental associations allied with influential notables who are strongly attached to their native lands. We successively analyse the dynamics of conservation and development in the Chouf Reserve, and the relationships between power(s) and practices around conservation issues. We highlight the complex entanglement of relations and interests involving the regional leader, the State and civil society. Our ambition is to rethink conservation strategies taking into account the socio-cultural and political particularities of Chouf, and of Lebanon in general. We also aim to partially fill a gap in the critical literature on environment and conservation in the Middle East, largely deficient on the question of management of protected areas. The aim of this study is to analyse the images, the representations and idiom of those in power in Cappadocia at the time of the iron age. We hope to demonstrate that the ideology, practices and propaganda of these rulers can be examined and fully understood in a context characterized by both strong permanences from the hittite imperial past and important changes. The study is divided into six parts. The first one deals with the external sources (biblical, Urartian and Assyrian) and reviews the situation in terms of historical geography and geopolitics. The second presents the internal epigraphic and iconographic sources while proposing several new datations. The third section is devoted to a panorama, which we hope to be complete, of the society, the urbanization, the religion and the various rulers of our area. The fourth shows that the images (political and religious iconography) and the phraseology (topical, « royal» anthroponymy, annalistic formulas) used by those in power revolve around three elements : mountain and rock, vine and cereals, fair justice and « good government ». After a fifth part that centers on an examination over a long period of the iconography, the open air rock sanctuaries and the archeology of the cappadocian landscapes, the last section contextualizes our research in different koiné, seen as a meeting point between east and west, producing and absorbing various elements (commercial products, symbols, politcal titles and anthroponyms) and spreading them over the East (Assyria and the neo-hittite, Aramaic, Urartians and Phoenicians) and the West (Phrygia, Lycia, and the Greek and Lydian worlds). ; Ce travail se propose d'analyser les images et les langages des pouvoirs en Cappadoce à l'âge du fer.
