What role does social media play in the lives of Chinese youths as they adapt to the rapid economic and social changes in modern China? This book examines the social media experiences and practices of young middle class Chinese who moved to Beijing to study and with the hope of work and participation in the possibilities of social and professional life. Through an analysis of their use of WeChat we explore their enthusiasm for self-expression online, their mediated social relations (guanxi) with family, friends, classmates and colleagues and their engagement with questions of online civility. The authors argue that sustaining personal and social relationships in the context of China's modernity, including its soft regulation of internet and social media, demands new norms of positivity and online civility. This is framed by several tensions: between emerging opportunities for freedom of expression and long-standing traditions of social identity and reputation such as face (lian and mianzi); between traditional obligations to parents (xiaoshun) and the desire for personal autonomy; and the pressure to constitute and govern the internet as a space of positive energy and civility in support of national Chinese sovereignty. The social media practices and deliberations of the participants reveal a fascinating amalgam of traditional Chinese culture and philosophy and reflections on tradition and collectivism combined with an embrace of Western-influenced ideas of positive psychology, self-expression, social networks and pragmatic social relations.

"Reflecting emerging research and ongoing reassessments of social theory, The Wiley-Blackwell Companion to Major Social Theorists offers significant updates and revisions to the original Blackwell Companion published a decade ago. Volume I: Major Classical Theorists presents 18 comprehensive essays on social theorists writing in the classical tradition, more than half all-new for this Companion, written by some of the most eminent contemporary scholars in their field. In addition to detailing the make-up and development of specific social theories, each essay places the theorist and their ideas in personal, social, and historical context; and integrates the most current scholarship to offer assessments as to their continuing relevance. Well-known theorists such as Comte, Spencer, Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, Mead, Schutz, and Parsons are represented, as well as theorists historically excluded from the sociological canon, including Ibn Khaldun, Martineau, Gilman, and Du Bois. Other essays consider a set of classical theorists chosen for their particular relevance to contemporary theory: de Tocqueville on democracy, Schumpeter on capitalism, Mannheim on the sociology of knowledge, Veblen on consumer society, and Adorno on cultural theory. Edited by one of the most renowned figures in social theory, the Wiley-Blackwell Companion is an indispensable resource and reference to the life and times of the classical thinkers and their relevance to modern theorists and today's social world"--

There is a revival of interest in bridging social capital. Previous research about individual's bridging social capital has largely been based on analysis of social network ties. This research note refines & applies recent sociological ideas about personal networks to the area of individual's bridging social capital. After summarizing the literature, an exploratory statistical analysis of the personal networks of 149 Chinese urbanites is presented. The argument is that women with larger personal networks have more bonding social capital, while men with larger personal networks have more bridging social capital. The analysis closes by elaborating on the theme that personal networks capture emergent properties that are not easily identified solely through the study of dyadic social relationships. 3 Tables, 3 Graphs, 1 Appendix. With the radical changes in information production that the Internet has introduced, we stand at an important moment of transition, says Yochai Benkler in this thought-provoking book. The phenomenon he describes as social production is reshaping markets, while at the same time offering new opportunities to enhance individual freedom, cultural diversity, political discourse, and justice. But these results are by no means inevitable: a systematic campaign to protect the entrenched industrial information economy of the last century threatens the promise of today's emerging networked information environment. In this comprehensive social theory of the Internet and the networked information economy, Benkler describes how patterns of information, knowledge, and cultural production are changing-and shows that the way information and knowledge are made available can either limit or enlarge the ways people can create and express themselves. He describes the range of legal and policy choices that confront us and maintains that there is much to be gained-or lost-by the decisions we make today

Influence in complex networks and in particular Twitter has become recently a hot research topic. Detecting most influential users leads to reach a large-scale information diffusion area at low cost, something very useful in marketing or political campaigns. In this thesis, we propose a new approach that considers the several relations between users in order to assess influence in complex networks such as Twitter. We model Twitter as a multiplex heterogeneous network where users, tweets and objects are represented by nodes, and links model the different relations between them (e.g., retweets, mentions, and replies). The multiplex PageRank is applied to data from two datasets in the political field to rank candidates according to their influence. Even though the candidates' ranking reflects the reality, the multiplex PageRank scores are difficult to interpret because they are very close to each other. Thus, we want to go beyond a quantitative measure and we explore how relations between nodes in the network could reveal about the influence and propose TwitBelief, an approach to assess weighted influence of a certain node. This is based on the conjunctive combination rule from the belief functions theory that allow to combine different types of relations while expressing uncertainty about their importance weights. We experiment TwitBelief on a large amount of data gathered from Twitter during the European Elections 2014 and the French 2017 elections and deduce top influential candidates. The results show that our model is flexible enough to consider multiple interactions combination according to social scientists needs or requirements and that the numerical results of the belief theory are accurate. We also evaluate the approach over the CLEF RepLab 2014 data set and show that our approach leads to quite interesting results. We also propose two extensions of TwitBelief in order to consider the tweets content. The first is the estimation of polarized influence in Twitter network. In this extension, sentiment analysis of the tweets with the algorithm of forest decision trees allows to determine the influence polarity. The second extension is the categorization of communication styles in Twitter, it determines whether the communication style of Twitter users is informative, interactive or balanced.

Theories explaining the impacts of online media often swing between the actions of empowered individuals and the distribution structures put in place by powerful corporations. To explicate how these factors interact, we adapt the concept of audience flow to highlight the temporal dimension of web use and demonstrate how digital architectures subtly nudge masses of people into online attention flows. We identify sequential usage patterns through a network analysis of passively measured clickstreams, combined with data on website ownership and website architectures. Our sample, based on a panel of 1 million users, includes 1761 websites that reached at least 1% of Internet users in the United States. Our findings reveal previously unseen patterns of online audience formation, which have implications for studying media effects and understanding institutional power on the Internet.

AbstractThe mutual fund plays an important role in corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. From the perspective of the social network, using data from A‐listed companies in China from 2009 to 2016, this paper empirically tests the influence of mutual fund networks on corporate social responsibility behaviours. To solve the sample selection bias in this study, we utilize propensity score matching to find the different social responsibility behaviours between firms with or without highly concentrated mutual funds. Our results suggest that mutual fund investors positively impact a firm's corporate social responsibility performance, as predicted. The fund network centrality and pressure mechanism have a positive impact on corporate social responsibility performance because they provide more peer pressure and network information to firms in which they are heavily invested. This paper provides new evidence on how mutual fund investors affect corporate social responsibility performance, which is meaningful to examine in corporate green governance.
