- Starting from an analysis of the psychoanalytic acceptation of the word "conflict", the author focuses on one of the major social-political conflicts that are currently taking place in our world. First of all, the analysis aims to evaluate what place psychoanalytic competence can take in the social sphere, differentiating this approach from other traditional points of view: i.e. political, economic, cultural, and so on. In order to give an example of the use of this specific competence, Robi Friedman was invited as a speaker. This colleague carried out experimental work with a group comprised of Israelis and Palestinians, on the theme of the mutual traumas experienced in the many conflicts that have broken out between the two populations. With Robi Friedman, the dialogue unfolding in the text allows us to identify not only the possibilities that present themselves when psychological-psychoanalytic competence is involved, but also the limits that have to be taken into consideration by those who mean to use this competence. Throughout the analysis, some significant hypotheses are put forward as to the reasons that make a conflict unsolvable. We examine the economic well-being of the elderly, using the Levy
Institute Measure of EconomicWell-Being (LIMEW). The LIMEW is
a comprehensive measure that incorporates broader definitions of income,
from wealth, government expenditures, and taxes, than standard
income and also includes the value of household production. We find
that the elderly are much better off relative to the non-elderly according
to the LIMEW than according to the money income or the Census
Bureau's "Extended Income" (EI) concept. The main reason is the
much higher income from wealth and net government expenditures
for the elderly than for the non-elderly. Both mean and median measures
of the LIMEW also grew much faster for the elderly than for the
non-elderly over the period 1989-2001. In contrast, growth rates of
money income were actually greater for the non-elderly than for the
elderly over this period. We also find that the degree of inequality in
the LIMEW is substantially higher among the elderly than among the
non-elderly. In contrast, inequality in EI is virtually identical between
the two groups. Inequality in the LIMEW grew for both the elderly
and the non-elderly, while the inequality in EI (as well as in standard
money income) grew only for the latter group.

PurposeThis paper sets out to address the influence of relational variables, such as trust and commitment, on international joint venture (IJV) performance, in the empirical context of UK/Chinese joint ventures.Design/methodology/approachThe paper starts with a discussion of the importance of inter‐firm relationships in China and how there currently exists relatively little research in this area. Qualitative research was chosen to create a holistic picture of the possible impact of relational factors on IJV performance.FindingsTrust appears to be the most important of the relational factors on IJV performance, followed by commitment, cooperation and satisfaction. Chinese cultural values, such asguanxi, also need to be taken into account as an important factor of IJV relationships.Research limitations/implicationsWhen researching inter‐firm relationships, ideally data would be gathered from both parties. This was not possible owing to difficulties encountered in gaining access to the Chinese parent organisations. Nevertheless, the findings are of interest to British firms interested in the Chinese market.Practical implicationsJoint ventures in China continue to experience high failure rates. Failure to nurture relationships with joint venture partners is one reason for failure. Despite the limitations noted above, the findings make a useful contribution to the management literature on China.Originality/valueWhereas many researchers have studied financial and non‐financial measures of joint venture performance, little has been written on relational factors and performance.

- The way immigrant students are distributed in the Italian schools appears unequal, both at regional and at local level, and also in the single schools and classes. The article reflects upon the consequences of such phenomenon and on the strategies to be carried out in order to prevent the building of "separate classes", mostly attended by students whose citizenship is not Italian. The article takes into account the ways distribution is carried out in several European countries - and in particular the case of the carte scolaire in France -, analising the policies of orientation of enrolments and the risks of school apartheid. For what concerns Italy - where there is a variety of situations because of the liberalisation of accesses - the risk of an unequal distribution and of an -inner segregation- is confirmed, which could be emphasized by special measures in favour of immigrants. Finally, the article introduces the reasons for the school mix and the debate on the consequences of heterogeneity in class, which is linked to a greater equity but not necessarily to a lower scholastic achievement, as long as it is supported by measures of complex instruction, differentiated didactic, intercultural prospective, and a planning at local level based on the pact between school and territory.Keywords immigrants school inequality intercultural education distribution

This essay argues that while historians of working-class women have generally developed a complex and multi-faceted approach to studying their subjects, that religion has remained largely invisible in such studies. This essay argues for the value of incorporating religion as a category of analysis in the study of working-class women. It provides some discussion of absences in the existing literature, primarily using American and English Canadian examples along with a few forays into relevant British work. More attention is focused on recent literature which does fully incorporate religion into the lives of their subjects, such as work in African-American women's history and within the field of "lived religion". Scholars of lived religion explore religion as part of working-class women's lives, and demonstrate the complex, messy and important ways in which the religious and the secular can combine in everyday lives. This essay explores reasons why most scholars of working-class women have largely ignored religion and argues that the approaches discussed here can point the way forward for the field of working-class women's history. The essay provides examples of particular areas of study, such as motherhood, consumption and women and unions, as areas where our ability to "see" religion as part of women's lives would deepen and strengthen our understanding of these topics.

Research on Life Objective Structures of Managers and Entrepreneurs in Serbia
The purpose of the paper herein is to investigate the different life objective structures of managers and specialists in public enterprises. Owners of private enterprises - entrepreneurs were analyzed as control group. Considering the data obtained by using the random sampling method, one may come to conclusions concerning the characteristics of the observed population. The research revealed that successful private owners-entrepreneurs, being the capital holders, have different structure of life objectives comparing to both managers and specialists in public organizations. The basic idea is that this can be considered as inseparable part of economic growth in any organization which also reflects on the management as well. Since the entrepreneurs invested the private capital to realize their ideas, it is logical that they want to increase their capital. On the other hand, managers and specialists in public enterprises do not have such a great sense for capital increment. They rather share the capital preferring to be sociable (clubs sponsors, great humanitarians). The reason of such acting can be found in a fact that Serbia was influenced by socialism which further resulted in poor education of managers and specialists to change their way of thinking. Managers as well as specialists should become knowledge workers who shall exchange the knowledge.

AbstractMobile data services are entering into all aspects of people's life and are expected to be an important revenue source of telecom carriers. Nevertheless, the acceptance pace of mobile data services is slower than the expected level projected by the telecommunication industry. This research investigated the reason that people use mobile data services in China. Combined with subscribers' experience factors, an extended technology acceptance model (TAM) for mobile data services was presented. The model was tested using data collected from 802 mobile subscribers. The findings of the study indicate that mobile voice service and innovation experience of mobile data services affect subscribers' consumption intention greatly; subscribers' perceived ease‐of‐use and brand experience influence subscribers' attitude towards mobile data services largely. Promotion of mobile data services is most effective when it is promoted with perfect voice service experience. Additionally, our findings suggest that mobile service carriers need to enhance their investments in mobile data services' R&D. Collaboration among the value chain members of mobile data services will promise cutting‐edge new products and services. Using system methodology, a mobile data service infusion system model was constructed to explain the general adoption rules of mobile data services. The adoption of mobile data services in mobile logistics area was also discussed. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The aim of this article is to explore some of the ways in which British South Asian women survivors of sexual violence (in particular, those who are either British born or have lived in the UK for most of their lives and are fluent English speakers) construct the effects of `culture' within their accounts of sexually violent experiences. We present a discursive analysis based on semi-structured interviews with eight English-speaking women of South Asian origin living in the UK, who had either escaped from or were currently seeking help for sexual violence. Our analysis discusses how a discourse of `culture as problematic and unchangeable' is both accepted and challenged simultaneously. Culture is presented as the reason why family and community members hold problematic views about sexually violent experiences. However, these women simultaneously resist this discourse through demonstrating their disappointment and ambivalence with their family and community-held views. Furthermore, we discuss how such constructions intersect (or not) with service provider constructions as reported in previous research. We also discuss the implications that our analysis may have for service provision and propose a set of theories and models that might inform them. This study forms part of a larger project on South Asian women's experiences of sexual violence.

Can we assume, then, that more than the doctrine of faith, it was this lived experience which placed the Christians ever anew before this difficult question: Of what use are history and politics to Christianity? Can we not make do without them? Tertullian's famous question – "What indeed has Athens to do with Jerusalem? What concord is there between the Academy and the Church?" – began a centuries-old dispute about the relation between theology and philosophy, between faith and reason, which became a principle axis of tension between Christianity and the Hellenistic legacy. But Tertullian's question can also be understood as pertaining to the problem of Christianity's relation to history and politics: What indeed has Athens to do with Jerusalem, the Agora with the Temple, the polis with the Church? Thus the tension between Christianity and the classical world takes on yet another dimension. It is the conflict of faith and eternity with history and politics, of the faithful pilgrim member of the People of God with the loyal citizen of a political community. Christianity attempted to resolve this conflict by reformulating the fundamental concepts of classical politics and philosophy, but the main doubts still remained, and led to new tensions and currents within Christianity itself.

The research has demonstrated that cognitive-behavioral treatment programs for offenders work to reduce recidivism. One reason these programs have been found to be effective is that they target one of the "number one" predictors of crime, antisocial attitudes and values. Unfortunately, these programs may not "work" for all offenders. The literature suggests that personal characteristics of offenders, although not directly related to recidivism, may in fact interfere or hinder the ability for the program to "work." This is referred to in the literature as the "responsivity principle." This study seeks to understand the role that personal or responsivity characteristics of offenders play in whether these attitudes and distortions were reduced. This study found that although individual responsivity characteristics alone were not related to whether the program was successful, individuals with a combination of the important responsivity characteristics (e.g., low intelligence, low self-esteem, and history of sexual abuse) were less likely to benefit from the program. In fact, their cognitive distortions were often made worse. Thus, it may be that responsivity should be seen as having a cumulative effect. The more "issues" an offender has, the less likely the treatment will accomplish what it is "supposed to do"—which in this case was to reduce antisocial or cognitive distortions.

This paper provides evidence of a change in the relationship between individual satisfaction with the state of country's economy and income inequality during transition from a command to market economic system. Using data from a series of extensive and frequent surveys of Polish population, we identify a structural break in this relationship. In the beginning of transition, an increase in income inequality is interpreted by population as a positive signal of increased opportunities; this sentiment is particularly strong among older people and people with right-wing political views. Later in the transition period, increased inequality becomes an important reason for dissatisfaction of the public with the country's economic situation and reforms, as people become more skeptical about the legitimacy of income generation process. We also provide direct evidence from opinion polls of a change in the public sentiment about income inequality. ; Cet article illustre le retournement de la tolérance aux inégalités au cours d'une période de forte croissance et de transformation économique et politique rapide. Cette évolution coïncide avec la montée, au sein de la population, d'un certain rejet des élites politiques.

This paper investigates three key aspects areas that affect the management of migratory wildlife. The first issue is whether it is better to have a single Transfrontier park or to have several disjoint ones. We find that economically, it makes no difference, as long as the same institutional framework applies to all the disjoint areas. We however reason that from a conservation perspective, it is better to have a single transfrontier park due to economies of scale attainable from a larger reserve. We also investigate the conditions under which the local communities will cooperate with the conservation effort and the paper concludes that as long as the flow of benefits from the park authorities to the community is greater than the marginal benefit from the community's alternative source of income, cooperation will exist. Institutional setups invariably affect the success of Transfrontier park management and we discuss some of the responsibilities government and organizations have to ensure that the parks are successful. To this effect, organisations should be involved only in as much as setting up an institutional framework that allows for equalization of benefits and costs where concerned.

An important policy instrument for governments to modify travel behavior and manage the increasing travel demand is the introduction of a congestion pricing system. In this study, the influence of a detailed classification of activities is examined to assess likely traveler response to congestion pricing scenarios. Despite the fact that most studies do not differentiate between activity categories, the value of time and in general the space-time properties and constraints of different types of activities vary widely. For this reason, it is of importance to provide sufficient detail and sensitivity in assessing the impact of congestion pricing scenarios. In addition, a first assessment of possible multi-faceted adaptation patterns of travelers is presented. For these purposes, a stated adaptation study was conducted in Flanders (Dutch speaking region of Belgium). The experiment was conducted through an interactive stated adaptation survey. In the stated adaptation experiment respondents could indicate their state responses to the congestion pricing scenario. The most prevalent conclusion is that the activity type significantly predetermines the willingness to express a more environmental-friendly behavior (i.e. reducing the number of trips, reducing the total distance traveled, switching to more environmental-friendly modes). Also, the willingness to show ecological activity-travel behavior (e.g. carpooling and using public transport) in a non-pricing situation is a major differentiator of future behavior in a congestion pricing scenario.

Vehicles are burning fuels inefficiently. Nowadays, there is a strong correlation between CO2emission and climate change. The article estimates a theoretical environmental impact of biofuel mixtures on the transport sector. A high ratio of road transportation in CO2emission caused by humanity made necessary to research the estimation of the environmental impact of biofuel mixtures. We have to clarify the emission of the transport sector in order to get information about the role of the impact that is a further step to a sustainable society. Sustainable development is a kind of development where the pace of technical development, the satiation of increasing supply and the raw materials and resources of the Earth are poised so that the rate of living and the opportunities of the future generations should not decline. One of the major goals of transport policy of the European Union is sustainable mobility. For this reason, transportation systems must be developed and standardized and the effectiveness of transportation service must be increased while environmental pollution must be decreased or prevented. There is a justifiable demand put forward by the society to moderate the environmental impacts caused by road transportation. This article deals with modelling the environmental impact of ethanol‐gasoline mixtures and diesel oil‐ethanol‐biodiesel mixtures. First published online: 27 Oct 2010
