Based on an analysis of the Meningitis Vaccine Project (MVP), a public-private partnership (PPP) set up to introduce the MenAfriVac® vaccine in African countries, this article examines the failures of an accelerated disease control programme that targeted a highly infectious disease. I argue that the integration of MenAfriVac® into the World Health Organization's (WHO) Expanded Programme on Immunisation had the effect of reinforcing inequalities in access, in particular during epidemic emergencies. I will also show how vaccine shortages during an outbreak in Niger led to political tensions and to the emergence of a parallel and unregulated 'black market' of vaccines.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about rapid changes to all forms of human interaction and mobility from travel, work conditions, learning environments, to social activities. Around the world, individuals and communities had to deal with both health-related fears and stress, prompted by social distancing and isolation. While the health advantages of the quarantine order have been well documented, its emotional strain on people has had far reaching consequences. As a coping mechanism to deal with the stress of quarantine, the internet was suddenly flooded with posts and videos of people turning to music as a form of individual and communal healing. This paper looks at how communities around the world found solace in music as a form of solidarity that united people regardless of age, gender, nationality, creed and political affiliation. The prospects of music in presenting people with a sense of belonging in times of solitude is explored through the various accounts around the world on the healing power of music. Findings further strengthen previous works on the effects of music on a person's emotional stability and as a means of communal solidarity.

The US Justice Department's arrest of several affiliates of the Russian-speaking REvil ransomware group comes a month after Washington hosted a virtual international summit on ransomware attacks. The decision to leave Russia out of the summit will inevitably limit the effectiveness of the operation.

This essay discusses the hypothesis of 'the commodification of living knowledge'. This hypothesis sheds light on contemporary capitalism's attempt to capture knowledge produced by living labour within the institutions of the welfare state in its process of valorisation, which provides another perspective on how 'the welfare state' transforms into 'the competitive state'. This discussion situates itself within the post-workerist literature, especially referring to twenty-year-old publication of the literat Michael Hardt and philosopher Antonio Negri's magnum opus Empire (2000). Focusing on the Nordic welfare state, the aim of the essay is to show how capital attempts to commodify living knowledge produced this setting. This is particularly exemplified through the phenomenon of 'welfare export' reflecting how the common is commodified. Through the discussion of how the Nordic welfare state is re-configured, the essay concludes by locating a new site of political struggle, as phenomenon such as 'welfare export' forces us to critically reflect on the purpose of welfare and the role of the welfare state as such in Empire.
