La igualdad de género en la ciencia es un área de intervención pública de reciente creación en España. En este artículo se estudia el impacto en su formación (2002-2014) de dos tipos de fenómeno: por una parte, la existencia de un sólido conjunto de propuestas a nivel europeo; por otro, los cambios de partido en el gobierno en 2004, del PP al PSOE, y en 2011/2012, del PSOE al PP. Se caracteriza primero la incorporación del tema a la agenda gubernamental nacional desde un enfoque combinado de ventana de políticas con transferencia de políticas, y a continuación la creación y evolución de la Unidad Mujeres y Ciencia como eje central de la intervención gubernamental en este sector. A partir de entrevistas semiestructuradas a personas que han participado en la formulación y/o puesta en marcha de medidas se (reconstruye) la representación del problema de la desigualdad de género en universidades y centros de investigación públicos. Después de identificar los cambios observados a partir del último cambio de partido en el gobierno, se ofrecen algunas conclusiones relativas a la influencia relativa de factores internacionales y domésticos en el proceso de formación de la política española de igualdad de género en la ciencia. ; Gender equality in science is an area of public intervention of recent creation in Spain. In this article I explore its process of formation (2002-2014) attending to the foreseeable impact of two kinds of phenomena: on the one hand, a solid pool of European proposals; on the other, two turnovers in national government in 2004, from PP to PSOE, and in 2011/2012, from PSOE to PP. Firstly I characterize its entry in the national governmental agenda following a mixed approach –policy window plus policy transfer—, and the creation and development of the Women and Science Unit as the central axe of the governmental intervention in this policy sector. From interviews to people involved in formulation and implementation of such measures en 2006/2010 I (re)construct the problem representation of gender inequity in public universities and research institutes. After having identified the major changes observed in this policy since the last government turnover, I offer some conclusions about the relative influence of international and domestic factors in the process of formation of the Spanish gender equality policy in science.

This article is an attempt to establish not only that (1) the persistence of Kpelle culture is due to the effectiveness of Poro organization, but that (2) the political organization of Kpelle Chiefdoms is shaped largely by Poro influence and that, though culturally pervasive, even dominant, (3) the Poro is organizationally a localized phenomenon with no Kpelle‐wide unity of organization.

The conservative in a revolutionary period always represents somewhat of an anomaly. Were society still cohesive, it would occur to no one to be a conservative for a serious alternative to the existing structure would be inconceivable. But a revolutionary period is a symptom precisely of the fact that the self-evidence of the goals of the social effort has disintegrated, that a significant segment of society holds values which either cannot or will not be assimilated. What had been taken for granted must now be defended and the act of defense introduces rigidity. The deeper the fissure, the more inflexible the contending positions and the greater the temptation to dogmatism. Were the "legitimate" structure still universally accepted, it would not be necessary to demonstrate its validity; but the act of defense exhibits the possibility of an alternative.Once the existing legitimacy has been challenged, no real discourse between the contenders is possible any longer, for they cease to speak the same language. It is not the adjustment of differences within a political system which is now at issue, but the political system itself.

In 2010 it will be 150 years since John Ruskin's major intervention in political economy was published. While in many ways Ruskin remains a well-known British commentator, his work on political economy has languished, relatively under-appreciated and seldom discussed. In this short review of Ruskin's political economy, the central aspects of his analysis are introduced and summarised. This is then allied to a short indication of how these ideas remain (especially) relevant today, as a prompt to those interested in thinking through analytical alternatives in light of the current travails of contemporary capitalism, to examine and re-engage with John Ruskin's insights into the character and problems of economics.

This paper studies the link between political news releases, and the returns and volatilities in the stock markets of Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius. Political news releases are viewed as proxies for political risk. The results indicate that political news events regarding domestic and foreign, excluding Russia, political issues led, on average, to lower uncertainty in the stock markets of Riga and Tallinn in 2001-2003. At the same time, political risk from Russia increased the volatility of the stock market in Tallinn. We found that there is only a weak relationship between political risks of different origins and the stock market volatility in the Baltic states in 2004-2007. In addition, we found a significant Monday effect, consistent with the trading behavior of institutional investors.
