[Translated with www.DeepL.com] ; Based on the Augustianian dualism of experience and knowledge, this report discusses the history of Fechner's »Ästhetik von unten« in the course of the last 100 years. The British philosophy of enlightenment is shown to be the source of this empiric theory of aesthetics, its socio-political relevance is demonstrated by the fervour of his often strongly biased contemporary critics, such as E. v. Hartmann, F. Brentano and B. Croce. At the beginning of this century an extraordinary number of experiments in aesthetical psychology were made but their results offered no base for later research to formulate a convincing theory. After World War II, research in this field was influenced by element orientated theories (information theory) which is criticized by the author who recommends a return to the ideas of Gestalt psychology. ; notReviewed ; publishedVersion

A review article on books edited by: Bruce Robbins, Intellectuals: Aesthetics, Politics, Academics (Minneapolis: U of Minnesota Press, 1990) & Ralph Miliband, Leo Panitch, & John Saville, The Retreat of the Intellectuals: Socialist Register 1990 (London: Merlin Press, 1990 [see listings in IRPS No. 67]). Intellectuals, a collection of essays & interviews, examines left-wing intellectuals in contemporary society from a postmodern perspective. Poorly written & often incoherent, the volume includes essays on the peculiarities of English in the metanarratives of knowledge & power, & on the British cultural scene. Also included are interviews with Edward Said & Gayatri C. Spivak. The Retreat of the Intellectuals, a collection of sixteen essays, offers a resentment of socialism & an exploration of the current status of Left intellectuals. A superfluous testament to socialist faith, this book takes up the issue of socialism in pluralistic cultures, but offers little that has not already been said elsewhere. W. Howard
This is the first comprehensive study of the political philosophy of the British philosopher R. G. Collingwood, best known for his contributions to aesthetics and the philosophy of history. However his political thought, and in particular his book The New Leviathan, have been neglected, even dismissed in some quarters. Professor Boucher argues for the importance of this political theory and provides a perspicuous account of its development and originality. He contends that The New Leviathan is an attempt to reconcile philosophy and history, theory and practice. Collingwood's distinctive contribution to modern political and social thought is seen as his sustained project of distinguishing utility from right, and right from duty; the passion for history coincides with the ethical thought because Collingwood wishes to identify dutiful, or moral, action with a historical civilization. Drawing on a wealth of manuscript material, this book will prove invaluable to political philosophers and intellectual historians
