This discussion focuses on the cosmopolitan nature of Tel Aviv, the cultural & political realities of Israel, & the conflict between Israelis & Palestinians. Israel is a much more diverse nation than is commonly supposed, with TV stations broadcasting in Arabic & Russian, restaurants specializing in cuisines from around the world, & a population that hails from many different parts of the globe, with a great variety of cultural traditions. Specific topics surveyed include how the issues of globalization & diversity affect the Jewish state, the great contrasts between Israel's liberal urban areas & the more religiously conservative rural ones, Ariel Sharon's controversial policies regarding the occupied territories, the consequences of the victory of Hamas in the Palestinian elections, an analysis of the 2005 Israeli elections, & the potential new directions for the Israeli government in a post-Sharon era. The Portuguese Presidency took place between two landmarks of the Israel-Palestinian question: the Hamas takeover in Gaza on June IS, 2007 & the Annapolis Conference, on November 27. Although the European Union did support the policy of ostracization of Ham as imposed by the Quartet, it was not always easy to deal with the diverse positions of the 27 member states of the EU. As a consensus-builder, Portugal adopted a position of neutrality vis-a-vis the several European sensitivities but did not shy away from putting the most controversial issues on the table, including Israeli colonates in the occupied territories. Taking as a starting point the Copenhagen School's theory of regional complexes, this article debates the immediate causes & consequences of the Turkish policy to the Israel-Palestine conflict, & the changes that occurred on the Turkish foreign policy for the Middle East since the AKP (Justice & Development Party) of Recep Tayyip Erdog?an was elected in 2002. Furthermore it will reflect on Turkey's behavior on what concerns the present Gaza crisis & on the causes & consequences of the potential transformation on the Turkish foreign policy for the Middle East. This article presents an overview of the current state of affairs of the EU-Israel relations and contributes to an expansion of the research agenda of this field. With a focus on the social and political developments of the last five years, it argues that this relationship exhibits patterns of cooperation and conflict, and attraction and repulsion. The remarkable importance that the EU has for Israel in the domains of economy, trade, science and culture is not matched by an equivalent political leverage, despite EU's efforts in influencing regional political developments, mainly the ones regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Departing from this context, the article critically engages with the literature and presents avenues for further inquiry on this topic. Adapted from the source document.

This article aims to reflect on migratory flows and the political role of the image using the war in Syria as a reference. Hamza Al-Ajweh's photograph titled "A Syrian child walks down a street past the rubble of destroyed buildings in the rebel-controlled city of Douma in the Eastern Ghouta enclave outside Damascus", taken on March 8, 2018, and published for the first time at the Los Angeles Times, will be used as a point of reference for the discussion and analysis proposed here. The complexity of displacements in this specific context of war leads us to design Syrian mobility after the beginning of the war in 2011, understanding that this complexity goes far beyond the formal definitions used by international agencies. For a closer understanding of the debate, we designed the discussion in three parts: a brief contextualization of the conflict in Syria, which began with the Arab Spring and continues until today. This socio-political contextualization serves here as a backdrop for discussing not only generic migratory categories but to help better understand people, movements and the demand for new categories and visual reflections that go beyond current perspectives. And in the last part, we will discuss how the image of the photographer Hamza Al-Ajweh helps us think about multiple political and transformative aspects of the picture.
