Dollarization is an acute monetary phenomenon which accompanies short-lived inflationary processes. In Latin America, it is usual to comment the threat, but effective dollarization only takes place with hyperinflation. An exception is Argentina, where there is an historically new phenomenon: a chronic, long-lived dollarization. If inertial inflation is particularly difficult to control, chronic dollarization is still more persistent

The crisis of 2001 & 2002 & the recovery from the crisis are an excellent example of the cyclical nature of Argentine politics & economics. The analysis of the evolution of the crisis is important in order to compare it with the key issues of regional development in Latin America in the 1980s, namely the "double transition" from authoritarianism to democracy & from state interventionism to market economy. Argentina: Cavallo, galope para o desastre?

This paper examines the latest stabilization effort in Argentina, the Cavallo Plan. The analytical framework is the tradeable-non tradeable textbook model, extended to the effect of real wages on aggregate demand. A Phillips-curve description of inflation is also included. It is shown that, by moving from a floating to a fixed-exchange rate regime, the ensuing trade deficit may lead to a classical run on reserves, forcing the re-establishment of floating exchange rates. In the process, the economy will go through a complete economic cycle, returning to inflation
