This article presents the results of an analysis of different sources concerned with the workers' revolt of July 15, 1927 (also known as the Vienna Palace of Justice fire). The author pays special attention to the socio-historical and source-critical evaluation of more than 100 photographs illustrating this fire on July 15, 1927 by using the shadows on buildings in order to establish an exact dating of the documented acts of violence. This "shadow method" he developed himself allows to clarify the motivations and social composition of the protesters and reveal the role of the police in escalating the violence. He is able to establish an exact chronology of the events and an explanation of the social dynamics leading to a death toll of 85 demonstrators and 4 police men.

The article investigates the political debate around the Austrian University Organisation Act from 1955. It focuses on three fields of dispute: The autonomy of the universities, the appointment procedure of professors, and the question of (parliamentary) control of the powerful ministry of education. Based on yet uncovered sources from the Austrian State Archive, the paper explains why, despite suggestions to alter the system at the three "neuralgic" issues mentioned, Austrian higher education in the 1950s remained in firm hands of the conservative elite that dominated Austrian universities. ; The article investigates the political debate around the Austrian University Organisation Act from 1955. ; Based on the slogan Vienna is different Austria shall be identified in the sense of process perspectives of self-image creation and identity finding and therefore guided through – from the Roman province Pannonia, along the rule of the Babenberger and Habsburgs up to the present Second Republic. Thereby it becomes clear that every self – as an individual, a nation, a culture, etc. – presents no closed totality but a self-difference. It turns out that all attempts to place diversity under a homogeneous predominant ideology (founding myth) fail, because ultimately again a difference is produced. The Central Europe Myth (Austria as a mediator between the Latin-Germanic and Slavic culture) proves that as well as topical attempts to establish Austria as vanguard of central Europe (Centrope) or multiculturalism as today's political leading idea. All efforts to create such a self-structure produce outsider figures (shadows) such as the Jew, the migrant, the Muslim or also the dissenting citizen. They deny the self-difference in their own identity and project it on to the threatening or dissenting other. Instead of universalizing separatist concepts like national identity, cultural essence, etc., it is advisable to realise the never closing self-difference of one's own self-finding process, to offer new possibilities for integration, tolerance, participation, solidarity, and democratizing.

Johanna Gehmacher uses publications that have appeared on the occasion of the anniversary of the Republic since 1965 along with other sources to draw the image of Austria's constantly changing identity policy. She bases her observations on Renata Saslecl's theory of the fantasmatic roots of social identity discourses and the fact these are not definitive, but continuous and ongoing. Her focus is on the question of the different interpretations over the course of time and within the political spectrum. Gehmacher conforms with Felix Kreissler's theory of Austria's development as a collective educational nation. In light of very recent developments she argues that the very concept of identity must be called into question. ; Johanna Gehmacher uses publications that have appeared on the occasion of the anniversary of the Republic since 1965 along with other sources to draw the image of Austria's constantly changing identity policy.
