Autonomous robotic systems are an indispensable component of work in many industries that are on the brink of entering many other areas of people's lives such as transportation or healthcare. Because attitudes towards new technologies shape consumers' decision to adopt these innovations, the present study examines the public opinion toward emergent robotic systems in Austria and Germany. The results showed that, in general, attitudes seemed rather positive in both countries. However, for Austria a rather ambivalent picture emerged: although Austrians exhibited the largest adoption rate of robotic technologies in Europe, at the same time they evaluated robots most unfavorably as compared to other European countries. Thus, experiences with robots seemed to have intensified potential downsides of automation that resulted in more concerns regarding the widespread use of robots.
Production is characterized by an antagonism between flexibility and productivity. Autonomous robots with learned skills show potential for relieving existing challenges. However, present failure susceptibility requires efficient intervention strategies to allow a technology establishment. This paper presents methods for on-site support based on a factory worker guidance system as well as remote assistance through tele-operation.
In 'Artificial Intelligence: Robot Law, Policy and Ethics', Nathalie Rébé discusses the legal and contemporary issues in relation to creating conscious robots. She argues that AI?s physical and decision-making capacities to act on its own means having to grant it a juridical personality.0The advancement in new technologies forces us to reconsider the role Artificial Intelligence (AI) will have in our society. Sectors such as education, transportation, jobs, sex, business, the military, medical and security will be particularly affected by the development of AI.0This work provides an analysis of cases and existing regulatory tools, which could be used by lawyers in future trials. Rébé also offers a new comprehensive framework to regulate Strong AI so that ?it? can safely live among humans.0This book is a response to two questions: first, should we ban or prohibit AI; and, secondly, if not, what should be the salient features of a legal or regulatory framework for AI?
Megatrends such as mass customization require an increasing transformability in production. Mobile robots hold great potential to address this challenge. They can freely move to different locations, are scalable and configurable to various tasks. Thus, an approach for the dynamic adaption through modular software packages (apps) is introduced. Based on this, the integration of the concept into the entire architecture of a smart factory and related planning systems is presented.
"This book provides a forum for the cybernetics field in critical emerging technologies, including research into design, engineering, and technological aspects of cyborg creation and existence alongside humankind for issues in their potential acceptance, participation, policy, governance, and requisite socialization between individualization and corporate, global, networked, mechanized human and humanized machine experiences"--
Abstract: This thesis describes a new terrain covering model which enables autonomous agents to traverse unknown system environments. The referring online terrain covering problem can be applied to many domains like agriculture, military, disaster management as well as the cleaning industry and aerospace. Mobile robots can be used to support people in time consuming, tedious and dangerous tasks like reconnaissance, search and rescue or surveillance. To cover an unknown environment high demands are placed on a robust and efficient application of robots. Decisions have to be made under uncertainty in a continuous effort. In addition to a proper coordination in terms of the task allocation problem, this thesis describes a new solution and analysis of the shortest path problem under uncertainties. The solution considers the minimization of costs as well as the minimization of uncertainties within a multiobjective optimization problem. The transformation results in an improved comparability of routes and offers a wide variety of pareto optimal routes.
; In the course of the fourth industrial revolution currently taking place, (partly) autonomous vehicle concepts are increasingly attracting media attention and thus gaining social and political relevance. This development affects not only the motor vehicle industry but also the agricultural machinery industry. Here, first electrically powered autonomous field robots (AFR) have made the leap from prototypes to market-ready products. AFR offer several agronomic advantages, such as less ground pressure due to their low weight, the possibility of even more precise and thus resource-saving application rates of fertilizers and pesticides or controlling weeds mechanically. But there are also fears of various reservations in agriculture, such as the successive replacement of their profession by robots. When and to what extent there will be broad market penetration for such technology depends crucially on the intention to use AFR within the agricultural sector. In the absence of studies on this topic, the aim of this dissertation is to investigate not only the farmers themselves but also the view of agricultural machinery producers, as suppliers and thus stakeholders of agriculture, on possible acceptance factors of autonomous field technology among farmers, to obtain in this way a more comprehensive picture of the acceptance process. For this purpose, the intention to use electric mobility (e-mobility) by farmers in general and AFR in particular is considered first (Part I). This is followed by an analysis of the considered behavioral intention of farmers from the perspective of different agricultural machinery manufacturers, divided into established agricultural machinery companies and AgTech startups. On the one hand, agricultural machinery manufacturers have valuable experience regarding the purchasing behavior of their customers; on the other hand, it is strategically important or even of existential importance (AgTech Startups) to correctly assess the future success of AFR (Part II). In this way, the dissertation can contribute to empirical research on the technology acceptance process in agriculture in general and in relation to AFR in particular, while providing impulses for a design of future AFR adoption and diffusion strategies. Finally, societal perceptions of "rural" and "industrial" agriculture in general as well as the market for bioenergy are considered in the form of a excursus (Part III). ; 2021-12-07
Customer-specific products, a wide variety of variants and high flexibility: Modern production systems have to meet constantly increasing challenges such as individualization or high variation of products and high flexibility. Classic, rigidly linked production is increasingly reaching its limits. The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT and the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering WZL of RWTH Aachen University are therefore working with industrial partners in the BMBF-funded research project freeMoVe to develop a new organisational form of assembly, the so-called dynamically interconnected assembly. This article therefore describes the use of mobile robots for transport and handling in dynamically interconnected assembly systems. The requirements for mobile robots, the technical and organisational challenges, the safety for humans, when using mobile autonomous robots, the control of the robots by means of a fleet manager and the integration of the robots into this overall new concept of assembly organisation are described.
