Analysing recent documentary films dealing with undocumented migration at the Schengen Area's fringes and against the backdrop of what has been termed the `European refugee crisis', Jan Kühnemund investigates the interface between migration discourses and image discourses. By reading Helena María Viramontes's "Cariboo Cafe" and Daniel Chacon's "Godoy Lives," this essay argues that Chicana/o fiction articulates what I call a "borderlands ethics." Both Viramontes and Chacon give the undocumented migrant the power to merge the United States and Latin America, self and other, citizen and noncitizen. These mergers demonstrate how a borderlands ethical stance can produce new unauthorized truths and relations outside the law and beyond national borders. However, these stories of ghostly kinship also produce a political imperative: to resurrect borderlands relations and experiences in the public sphere. Through the trope of haunting and an engagement with a borderlands ethics, "The Cariboo Cafe" and "Godoy Lives" help us understand that maintaining a Latina/o ethnic identity is not a simple act of preservation; it is an ethico-political project that challenges the United States to form new visions of democracy and new relations with Latin America in order to maintain transborder communities and families.

Current studies on the borderland territories suggest insufficiency of research tools, which, if applied, would improve the theoretical level of the conducted studies, particularly if that research would cover the borderlands of civilizations. Until now, the research on borderlands in Poland and elsewhere were dominated by the concepts of borderlands and trans‐borderness. In my opinion, to cover the full scope of social phenomena and processes, which appear on borderland and trans‐border territories, the new terms should be introduced: "borderlandness" together with the existing "borderland" and the "trans‐borderland" to complement with the "trans‐borderlandness". In this paper I intend to present shortly the conception of the borderland applied in my research and, on this basis, I try to develop the concept of borderlandness as well as to stress its utility in the studies of borderlands, including the borders of civilizations.

This article presents a conceptual history of socialism in two Western borderlands
of the Russian Empire—namely, the Kingdom of Poland and the
Grand Duchy of Finland. A contrastive comparison is used to examine the
birth, dissemination, and breakthrough of the concept from its first appearance
until the Revolution of 1905. The concept entered Polish political conversation
as a self-applied label among émigrés in the 1830s, whereas the
opponents of socialism made it famous in Finland in the 1840s in Swedish
and in the 1860s in Finnish. When socialism became a mass movement at
the turn of the century, socialist parties (re)defined the concept through
underground leaflets and brochures in Poland, and through a legal labor
press in Finland. In both cases, the Revolution of 1905 meant the final democratization
of socialism, attaching more meanings to the concept and
making it the most discussed ism of modern politics.
