The Central African Republic is an extremely impoverished country that has seen little development since its independence from France in 1960. It is ranked 180 out of 186 countries on the U.N. Human Development Index (report 2016) and is in the Fund for Peace's top 10 failed states, next to Haiti and Afghanistan. The latest surge of violence in the country began when the Séléka rebels captured power in March 2013. They were responsible for mass killings, sexual violence, and looting. This paper critically analyses the factors that led to the outbreak of that conflict one of which the role that played by the foreign actors in this conflict. The research found that there are four main elements that caused the conflict in the CAR including exclusion, repression, and competition over resources and foreign involvement. One of the important reasons behind that conflict is an economic factor which is the struggle for power and resources among political elites. The paper also found the repression combined with exclusion policies adopted by the Bozize and the precedent regimes also contributed to the outbreak of violence in CAR finally, the empirical evidence showed that there was a deep economic crisis behind the conflict, with the withdrawal of foreign investors the Commercial crops such as cotton, coffee, also have deteriorated as well as the exploitation of forest income has declined.

Since the Central African Republic (CAR) gained independence from France in 1960 it has faced deep social, economic and political crises. The country has witnessed 10 military coup attempts between 2005 and 2015, which have aggravated political and economic development of the CAR. The most recent by leader of the Seleka coalition group, Michel Djotodia, against the government of Bozize in March 2013 that saw hundreds of thousands displaced and thousands killed. Although the violence in the CAR partially polarized Muslims and Christians, we argue in this paper that the driver of the conflict in the CAR is more a struggle for power among political elite. The aim is to explain the main motivations behind the political crisis and the changing dynamics of the violent conflict in the CAR.

The acts of violence have swept the whole Central African Republic (CAR) since March last year. When the Muslim fighters of Seleka rebel groups had deposed a Christian president Francois Bozize, the fighting between Christian militias and Muslim population broke out. The provisional government of the Muslim Michel Djotodia allegedly intentionally massacred civilians, including women, children and old people. In December 2013, under the resolution by the Security Council, UN, the French troops of 1600 men were sent to help to African Union soldiers to keep growing chaos at bay. But up to now, the violence has not been stopped. Nearly a million of people have been internally displaced in the country. A total of 935 thousand of Central Africans are currently sheltering in scrublands or living with their relatives. More than half of the city's population fled Bangui, some 60 per cent of those displaced are children, according to the UN refugee agency, UNHCR.

'Anarchy', 'religious war', 'genocide' and, recently, 'cannibalism' - these are some of the most commonly used words in Western news media when referring to the crisis in the Central African Republic (CAR), at least since the takeover of power by the rebel coalition Seleka in March 2013. In the context of these media stereotypes, this article unravels some of the complexities that have arisen in the CAR conflict since the fall of the Bozize regime and the Seleka takeover. We show how international actors have been pivotal in shaping the current crisis in the country. In order to help steer CAR out of its predicament, we show how important it is that international peacekeeping operations, policymakers and diplomats understand not only the situation on the ground but also the close ties major groups in CAR have with various regional and other international actors. If context awareness remains scant, there is a serious risk that their activities will at best be suboptimal and at worst aid in fuelling the crisis. Adapted from the source document.

The Central African Republic has been embroiled in a protracted conflict since 1966 and is still raging with no possible hope yet in sight for its resolution. The violent stage of the conflict is traced to the invasion of the country in 2012 by the Seleka armed militia group from the north of the country. This political instability resulted to the overthrow of President Francois Bozize and installation of a Moslem regime led by Michael Djolodia as President of the country. In retaliation and revenge to the outrageous killings, damage to properties and burning of communities targeted against the Christians/Animists in the south of the country by the Seleka, the anti-Balaka armed group was spontaneously formed to defend southern communities from further attacks. The conflict which was between the Seleka and the government army (FACA), has now spread to include the anti-Balaka, foreign fighters and international peace-keeper, all fighting against each other. It is against this backdrop that the article seek to analyze the conflict in that country and examine the reasons for the protraction of the conflict and interrogate the response strategies by the international community. The article applied the historical/descriptive research design. Secondary data gathered were thoroughly subjected to content analysis. This article discovered that greed, amongst the various conflicting parties and failure of the response strategies by the international community as reasons for the protraction of the conflict. The article concluded that over reliance by analysts on the liberal framework to the exclusion of other tradition like political economy and realist traditions, in the analysis of the country led the wrong implementation of the strategies in Central African Republic. The paper recommended the political economy and realist approaches to the analysis of the conflict with concomitant change of operational strategies to a full military actions to bring the violent conflict into an end like in the Darfur region of Sudan.
