This book provides a practical set of guidelines for people wishing to communicate and do business in Brazil. Good communication requires more than knowing the language. Orlando Kelm and David Victor, seasoned cross-cultural trainers for businesspeople, provide a guide through Victor's LESCANT model (Language, Environment, Social Organization, Context, Authority, Nonverbal, and Time). Each chapter addresses one of these topics and demonstrates how to evaluate the difference in Brazil, presenting examples to help people avoid common communication mistakes. The book is generously peppered with photographs to provide visual examples. Kelm and Victor complete the book with a chapter of case studies--good and bad. They then gathered comments from various US professionals working in Brazil and Brazilians working with US professionals about the interactions in the case, providing helpful observations about the situation. A franchise business cannot be separated from meeting the economic needs of business owners and increasing living standards. The mindset of businesspeople is always profitable as long as the business can run and relies heavily on business instincts in running a business. This study measures the impact of the existence of franchises in residential areas on the economy of the people of Tangerang district with a qualitative method with a phenomenology approach using content analysis and SWOT analysis methods. Qualitative findings indicate that the pattern of services provided by franchises is perceived to be better than the services of traditional traders. Therefore, the Regional Government of Tangerang Regency must take a joint role with traditional market managers in improving traditional markets and setting minimum service standards as well as capacity building and community empowerment in the economic sector, business development, providing Job Training Center (BLK) facilities that can be a place for coaching traditional traders.

ABSTRACTJohn Henry Guy worked in Britain and the United States throughout the first half of the twentieth century. He became the financial vice president of the M. Rumely Company of Indiana at just 31 years of age and, on his return to Britain, made a major contribution to the war effort while working as an accountant at the British Ministry of Munitions. It is also revealed that Guy took a broad view of accounting as a mechanism capable of achieving the more efficient use of resources by demonstrating its potential role within the domestic sphere. Throughout his career, Guy's religious convictions caused him great anxiety as he believed that the objectives of capitalism were fundamentally irreconcilable with the Christian principles that defined the legitimate conduct of daily life. Indeed, his own story demonstrates how easy it is for businesspeople to become associated with the shady side of commercial affairs.

AbstractLegislatures are key institutions that stabilize authoritarian rule. However, less is said about the individuals who populate these institutions or the pathways that take them to power. This is an oversight, since how autocrats recruit reflects upon their institutional capacities and adaptation to changing circumstances. Specifically, recruitment is challenging when regimes lack robust ruling parties to cultivate partisan loyalists and during periods of multiparty elections when candidates must provide a higher degree of self-financing. This article examines these dynamics across the lifespan of Cameroon's authoritarian regime and introduces an original biographical data set of over 900 legislators between 1973 and 2019. The data show there is an increased proportion of businesspeople in the legislature, but also a possible emerging preference for former civil servants. The article argues that civil service recruitment pipelines substitute for the monitoring functions a party might serve, while simultaneously preparing candidates for the unique financing needs of elections.

ABSTRACT Based on fieldwork conducted in 2013–2014 with a provincial‐level Chinese state‐owned construction firm in Luanda, this article examines how Chinese businesses attempted to expand in the aftermath of a booming period of Angolan postwar reconstruction. Chinese entrepreneurs found that business could only be done with the help of local mediators promising to open otherwise inaccessible portals to political expediency. They shared with their would‐be collaborators an image of Angola as a land of vast extractive opportunities, available only to those who could gain access through crucial personal connections. Highly aware of the opacity and potential deceptiveness of their "friends," in part because they engaged in dissimulative practices themselves, Chinese businesspeople evaluated Angolan partners less in terms of sincerity than efficacy. Amid a general atmosphere of mistrust, "reliability" emerged as a necessary quality for constructing relationships of mutual benefit and exploitation. AbstractAlthough the Chinese state has an outsized influence on shaping civil society in China, extant literature has generally overlooked the increasing role of the market in its non-governmental organization (NGO) development. This paper examines the marketization of Chinese civil society through an ethnographic investigation of funding relationships between domestic Chinese philanthropic foundations and grassroots NGOs. Two case studies of foundation venture philanthropy projects show that businesspeople, through their intensive involvement in foundation-led funding programmes, are introducing strong market influences to the non-profit sector. Notwithstanding the attraction of foundation funding, many NGOs decry the negative side effects of non-profit marketization. We argue that NGOs in this context risk being transformed into social product providers and resource-chasing machines, detracting from the self-directed social missions that many NGO leaders see as their original calling. These observations on emergent NGO–foundation relationships also reflect participants' increasing uncertainty about the direction of Chinese civil society development.

As an Indonesian city, Bandung has a lot of tourism potential with its local cultural diversity. The purpose of this research is to develop a conceptual model design of tourism, especially in Bandung city as one of the cultural identity cities in West Java. A system thinking approach with qualitative analysis, known as the Soft System Methodology (SSM), is used in this research. Qualitative data collection techniques were carried out by a purposive sampling technique which was obtained from the results of in-depth interviews with stakeholders that included academics, representatives of the government, communities, and businesspeople in the tourism sector. The result of this research is a conceptual model design for Bandung city tourism as the identity of a cultural city, called as Sunda Culture Center (Sunda Centrum).

The understanding of missions has continued to transform over time and today the idea of mission is seeking a new definition. In the 21st century missions caused a shift in Christian Colleges and Universities. Christian College and University students are not just being trained to enter into church ministry but they are training to become lawyers, doctors, politicians, college professors, businesspeople, and even serve in the armed forces empowered by the idea that their motivation is a sending by God. "Many students are searching for more than a job, career, or money." Ultimately a missional incarnational impact seeks a global understanding that is fueled with devotion and care for God's creation and his word. Christian college and university students are seeking the integration of missio dei and their vocation. Ignited by the transformational power of the incarnation their lives are filled with an impulse to carry out the mission of God in their world.

"Best practice" in policymaking and institution-building for the deployment of grid-connected renewable energy (GCRE) can be found scattered throughout reports and policy papers of major international actors and in the discourse of policymakers and businesspeople. This article collects and systematizes a "best practice" model and portrays it as a sector-specific description of a liberal market economy (LME). Also, the article provides a comparison of China's policies and institutions for GCRE with "best practice," finding that China's approach coincides with the latter only imperfectly. Divergences of the Chinese approach to GCRE as compared with the model can be explained, at least partially, in that "best practice" pertains to LMEs, and given that China is arguably not an LME. Hence, the particularities of China's approach to GCRE should be understood not as obstacles to renewables but as examples of regulatory and institutional diversity. Adapted from the source document.
