China, China scholarship and China scholars in postcolonial Taiwan
In: China: CIJ ; an international journal, Band 12, Heft 1, S. 1-21
ISSN: 0219-7472
China scholarship in Taiwan, in social sciences as well as humanities disciplines, is constituted by the choices of scholars over encountered and constantly reinterpreted imaginations of how China's names, identities and images are contextualised. Due to its colonial history, its civil war and Cold War legacies, and internal cleavages, China scholarship in Taiwan is characterised by strategic shifting among the Japanese, American and Chinese approaches to China, as well as their combination and recombination. The mechanism of choice, including travels that orient, reorient and disorient existing views on China, produces conjunctive scholarship. The rich repertoire of views on China, together with the politics of identity, challenge the objectivist stance of the social sciences to the extent that no view on China could be exempted from political implications and politicised social scrutiny. Concerns over exigent propriety in a social setting are internal to knowledge production. Therefore, understanding the process with which the historically derived approaches inform the China scholarship in Taiwan through the mechanism of encountering reveals both the uncertain nature of knowledge, in general, and the uncertain meaning associated with China worldwide, in particular. In: New politics: a journal of socialist thought, Band 9, Heft 3, S. 169-176
ISSN: 0028-6494
Discusses the political & economic ideologies & literary career of China Mieville. Her ambitions for writing urban fantasy, including purpose & impact, are addressed, & her literature is compared with the work of J. R. R. Tolkien. The relationship of Mieville's work, namely Perdido Street Station & The Scar, to political theory, criticism of colonialism, & elements of Marxism are examined. Her political development & activism in the Socialist Workers Party & Socialist Alliance are explored; however, the distinction between her activism & fictional writings is maintained. Mieville's passions for Marxist theory & collective activism, & prospects for future scholarly endeavors & fiction, are highlighted. L. Collins

Russia: turn to China?
In: SWP Comment, Band 7/2016
After its relations with the West deteriorated massively in the course of the Ukraine crisis, Russia has been aligning itself increasingly towards China. This shift is most obvious in the strategic spheres of military and energy cooperation. Even if the immediate impacts on Germany and the European Union – caused by the dynamics in the relationship between these two major neighbours in the East – are limited, the development is of great relevance for international relations and the global order. It would therefore be wrong to underestimate the long-term ramifications. Germany and the European Union should counterbalance these nascent tectonic shifts with inclusive and multilateral cooperation and dialogue initiatives in the Euro-Asian region. Regional and global cooperation should be shaped by economic exchange, infrastructure expansion and the search for solutions to global problems. (author's abstract)
China-Euphorie - China-Kritik
In: Aussenpolitik: German foreign affairs review. Deutsche Ausgabe, Band 41, Heft 3, S. 268-279
ISSN: 0004-8194
My first impression of The China Quarterly was its extraordinary efficiency. As I was about to enter the editor's office on my first day, I noticed that they had anticipated making my name plate and had already mounted it on the door. It was only later that I realized that the real cause for congratulation was the School's parsimony in making do with an old name plate to serve a new editor. So I shared a name plate with my predecessor, another D. Wilson. In more imaginative mood I could even toy with the idea that my candidacy had been approved over other applicants precisely because they would save money on a new name plate.
