The recent attacks on Mao Tse Tung are addressed in a discussion of the recent book Mao: The Unknown Story by Jung Chang, to argue that the fervent attack requires an assessment of the climate & the one sided opinions of the book. Analysis of works by Chang, Chang & Halliday indicate that the US needs China to be cleansed from the revolutionary past to become a capitalist opportunity, & to avoid a revival of Maoism through the linking of leftist intellectuals with working classes. As a salvo in the battle for the hearts & minds of the Chinese people, Changs book is generalized as part of a worldwide class conflict & ideological battle that requires a countering of the dishonest methodology in the context of the western fear that China could turn, once again, toward a social revolution.
