The article is a tribute to Phyllis Jacobson, her life, work, and relationship with her family and friends. The author, a life-long friend of Jacobson, provides a personal look and some insight into the personality and nature of her friend, and their relationships. The article also discusses aspects of their lives, particularly on politics, which always seemed to be on the dinner menu in their household. Then the author also discusses her relationship with her husband, Michael, brother to Phyllis; and the interaction, conversations, and memories therein. The tribute then turns from being personal into a brief bibliography of Jacobson's writings, a testament, as the author states, to the human spirit, and strength of will. Thereupon the author thanks her friend, and provides a parting tribute. M. Diem

A GENERATION AGO AMERICAN THEORY WAS CHARACTERIZED AS SECOND-RATE. THE DEATH OF CRITICAL SECONDARY WORK AT THAT TIME IS CONSTRASTED WITH THE PRESENTDAY ABUNDANCE OF MATERIALS AND THE CREATIVE USES TO WHICH THEY MAY BE PUT. THE SECONDARY LITERATURE WHICH PROLIFICATED, ESPECIALLY DURING THE LAST DECADE, SUPPLEMENTS THE TEXTBOOK-ANTHOLOGY APPROACH, SUGGESTING FRAMEWORKS BY WHICH INSTRUCTORS MAY DEVELOP THE AMERICAN THEORY COURSE THESE INCLUDE: THE FOUNDING OF AMERICA, CIVIL RELIGION, THE LINCOLN LITERATURE, AND THE NEOCONSERVATIVE PHENOMENON. THIS PAPER RESULTED FROM THE AUTHOR'S PARTICIPATION IN THE APSA/NEH SPONSORED ETHICAL ISSUES SEMINAR, "CITIZENSHIP: ANCIENT AND MODERN," DIRECTED BY HARVEY C. MANSFIELD, JR. AND ROBERT SCIGLIANO. THE AUTHOR WOULD LIKE TO THANK DOUGLAS MUZZIO, OF THE BARUCH COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE, FOR A NUMBER OF VALUABLE SUGGESTIONS.
