Some manuscripts have been produced for the personal use of their scribe only whereas a number of them are valued as autographs, most have been ephemeral and were discarded. This volume introduces a number of such manuscripts in a comparative perspective, from Japan to Europe through the Middle East. The main concern is the possibility of identifying the typical features of such manuscripts in terms of materials, visual organisation and content.

The fascinating yet still underexplored world of manuscripts hailing from Southeast Asia, including the nation-state of Indonesia, has received some impetus in recent years, thanks to the new appreciation for this written heritage by state and non-state actors both within and without the country. Traditionally perceived as a dry (and hardly scientific or 'intellectual') subject that was the preserve of a small circle of specialist librarians, codicology (and Asian codicology in particular) has become a vibrant discipline, with several teams of scholars and projects worldwide focusing on manuscripts as objects, as well as on 'manuscript cultures'. These projects and approaches duly recognise the role of manuscripts (and not onlytexts) as prime carriers of cultural and civilisational values across time and space, as well as their relevance for the culture and identity of contemporary societies. This essay reviews some recent publications on Indonesian manuscripts catering to researchers as well as the wider public.

Selecting and excerpting, summarizing and canonizing, arranging texts and visual signs in manuscripts appear to be universal practices. This volume analyses the fascinating vicissitudes of birth and development, growth and decrease, of manuscripts consisting of more texts ('multiple-text manuscripts'), at the example of a vast array of manuscript cultures, from the Indian, African, Christian, Islamic, and European domains.

The series publishes monographs and collective volumes contributing to the emerging field of manuscript studies (manuscriptology), which includes disciplines such as philology, palaeography, codicology, art history, and material analysis. SMC encourages comparative approaches, without geographical or other limitations on the material studied; it contributes to a historical and systematic survey of manuscript cultures, and provides a new foundation for current discussions in Cultural Studies.

This study uncovers the traditions behind the formative Classic Shàngshū (Venerated Documents). It reveals a genre of "Shū" (Documents) practice that was used creatively by contrasting conceptual communities for socio-philosophical ends. Working from Warring States-manuscript texts, it shows how different communities rewrote old cultural capital, becoming political actors by expanding their scope of action through literary thought production.
This paper examines annotations inscribed in three manuscripts by Demetrios Laskaris Leontares (1418 – post-1475), an aristocrat whose possession or use of a dozen codices is documented. Palaeographic and historical criteria place all three texts in his adolescence around the 1430s. The primary focus is tenth-century Laur. gr. 55.4, a well-known collection of military treatises, in which successive generations of the Laskaris Leontares family inserted notices on personal and imperial events (1408-50). Overlooked by previous scholarship, on blank folio 197v Demetrios Leontares penned and signed a short letter addressed to an emperor, which constitutes a rare autograph specimen of Byzantine epistolography. This item was previously transcribed by Bandini (1768), who declined to edit and interpret its 'barbaric and utterly illiterate' script. Providing a new edition and first translation, this study situates the text within the evolution of epistolographic conventions in the early fifteenth century, as evidenced in contemporary letters and/or prescribed in letter-writing manuals. Whether interpreted as a draft or copy of an actual letter or a classroom exercise, this short private text adds uncommon 'domestic' and documentary dimensions to the study of Late Byzantine rhetoric, ideology and epistolary culture. The investigation widens to include two other undated annotations that can likewise be assigned to Demetrios Leontares' youth: a co-ownership notice in recently commissioned Marc. gr. Z. 399 (5r) and a previously unpublished missive to an unnamed relative in twelfth-century Vat. gr. 586 (429v). Collective consideration of these three modest informal texts assists in clarifying their contexts and chronology, while elucidating broader themes of children, education, language and books in an aristocratic household.

This article reconstructs the early stages in the history of two manuscripts from El Escorial Library containing different Jewish treatises on Kabbalah from Late-Medieval Iberian authors. Both manuscripts, copied in Italy by Sephardic scribes, were acquired in the late sixteenth century for the new Royal Library in the Monastery of El Escorial. Codicological and paleographic elements are considered, as well as the transmission of Sephardic Kabbalah, in the light of book history and manuscript production of Sephardic Jews in sixteenth-century Italy. More specifically, the material analysis of the manuscripts will reveal how each one of them came to be a book, exposing diverse processes of production and consumption of handwritten books among Sephardic Jews in Italy. ; This article is a thoroughly revised and extended version of a paper presented at the Ninth Congress of the European Association for Jewish Studies, held in Ravenna, Italy, in July 2010. Both the paper and this article are the result of research carried out within the framework of the project INTELEG (Intellectual and Material Legacies of Late Medieval Sephardic Judaism). This project is headed by Prof. Esperanza Alfonso and funded by the European Research Council through the "Ideas" program of the VII Frame Program of the European Union. ; Peer reviewed

; The municipal Archive of Toledo keeps, among its valuable collection, a manuscript titled the Libro de los Juramentos de Toledo. Its external form is consistent with the importance of its contents, and our analysis has revealed two different moment in its elaboration process. Upon this diplomatic codex, the government, both kings and members of the city council, had to take the oath to respect the privileges and rights of this Imperial city. Besides the oath formula, its authors included other legislative texts, all related to municipal law, some of them from the city of Seville.
