At the 2001 Venice Biennale, the famous Belgian artist Luc Tuymans decided to exhibit a series of paintings titled "Mwana Kitoko (Beautiful White Man)" that dealt with the colonial past of his country. In a particular political context open to postcolonial reflection, Tuymans dared to show this delicate matter and thus politicized the Belgian Pavillon. Indeed, at that time, the colonial past began to lead to controversy in Belgium. Considering the position of "the artist as historian", this article seeks to determine the circumstances that led Tuymans to confront this subject as well as the impact of his exhibition in Venice. ; Lorsqu'en 2001 l'artiste belge Luc Tuymans est invité à représenter la Belgique à la Biennale de Venise, il choisit d'exposer un ensemble de toiles se référant explicitement à l'histoire coloniale de son pays, sous le titre Mwana Kitoko (Beautiful White Man). À une époque où le passé colonial fait l'objet d'une actualité particulièrement controversée en Belgique, il prend manifestement un « risque » en politisant de la sorte le Pavillon belge à Venise. In this article we will problematise the archive as a place of intersection of epistemological and juridico-political matrices, and show how it has characterised European modernity and its project of colonial expansion into non-European worlds. Initially, the focus will be on how the archive relates to the processes of knowledge extraction and recording to enable certain forms of government. On this background, we will then problematise the colonial archive in its specificity, analysing its relationship with the forms of epistemic violence that are interwoven within it from two different perspectives: the first is that the colonial archive in itself remains inaccessible through a gesture of silence that nevertheless has considerable effects on the status of the archive itself. The second focuses on the ways in which colonial archives constantly display an anguish about the lack of correspondence between the plans of colonial governmentality and its conceptual achievements, and the turmoil that this causes in relation to any attempt to establish racial and sexual identity. ; Dans cet article il sera question de problématiser l'archive comme lieu d'intersection de matrices épistémologiques et de matrices juridico-politiques, et de montrer la manière dont il a caractérisé la modernité européenne et son projet d'expansion coloniale dans des mondes extra-européens. En un premier temps on se focalisera sur la manière dont l'archive se lie aux processus d'extraction et enregistrement des savoirs pour permettre certaines formes de gouvernement. Although teached history has been limited to historians research for a long time, it also can lead to study legitimation process.Thus, analysis of construction forms, content and diffusion of the colonial history of the 3rd and 4th republic, as well as the recall of its presence in the colonial discussion prove that it is a discourse on colonization's legitimation. When teachers and writers of schoolbooks offered to childs their idealist vision of a colonial adventure that would be irrelevant to local populations, they passed a closed interpretation of the colonization that made the colonial domination unthinkable on most of people. So the anticolonialists contributed to keep the colonial order by using the main typologies that are developped in schoolbooks, so as to lead the criticism of the colonial adventure.

To what extent do colonial public investments continue to influence current regional inequalities in French-speaking West Africa? Using a new database and the spatial discontinuities of colonial investment policy, this paper gives evidence that early colonial investments had large and persistent effects on current outcomes. The nature of investments also matters. Current educational outcomes have been more specifically determined by colonial investments in education rather than health and infrastructures, and vice versa. I show that a major channel for this historical dependency is a strong persistence of investments; regions that got more at the early colonial times continued to get more.
