This study concerns the representation of colonial Latin American history and the characterisation of Daniel/Hatuey in the 2010 film-about-a-film También la lluvia. A metacinematic work comprising historical study and political commentary, También la lluvia has received mixed critical reactions regarding its portrayal of the historical and social inequalities it analyses. This article examines the ambiguous nature of the work by analysing the motif of conversion. It argues that, by foregrounding the contemporary conversion story of Costa, the film sacrifices both nuanced historical attention to the colonial past it dramatises and sustained development of one of its apparently central characters: Daniel/Hatuey, who is repeatedly converted into narrative and symbolic figures of secondary prominence, despite their importance to the development and legibility of the work as a whole. ; Publisher PDF ; Peer reviewed

Unlike the case of other European colonial powers that took part in the imperialist project between the end of the 1800s and the early 1900s, the Italian colonial experience in Libya and the Horn of Africa (1889-1947) does not count with extensive literature, either academic or artistic. The reason why this is so, in that the colonial venture has long been envisaged by the post-war political ruling class as a parenthesis of national history marked by shame and defeat whose public debate would create both internal controversies and international disapproval. The topic of colonial memory has long been dismissed and repressed on two fronts: at an institutional level, admission of colonial wrongdoings publicly happened only in the nineties; at an academic level, archives of the official colonial documentation have been set aside under the monopoly of an especially created committee thus greatly hindering historiographical research. These two issues become intertwined in the debated framework of public education, where history teaching becomes the tool for the reproduction of collective memory and the shaping of national identity. This research analyses the still withstanding legacy of colonial history among young Italians employing three different approaches to the qualitative methodology. A range of topics come into play when the legacy of colonial history and its memory meet the dynamic, multicultural, postcolonial Italian society that has been developing in the contemporary global era: perception of the immigration phenomenon, racist revivals, eurocentrism, definition of Italianness and survival of myths.

This article contributes to theorising colonialism and capitalism within the same analytic frame through a critical engagement with the uses of colonial history in new institutional economics (NIE). The 'colonial turn' in NIE holds significant diagnostic value because although it incorporates colonialism into its account of the 'great divergence', it maintains a liberal conception of capitalism predicated on private property, competitive markets, and the rule of law. It is argued that NIE achieves this effect by admitting colonialism into its history of capitalism while excluding it from its theory of capitalism. By filtering colonialism through the dichotomy between 'inclusive' and 'extractive' institutions, NIE upholds the categorical association of capitalist growth with inclusive institutions. Drawing on critical theories of political economy, the article shows the limits of the NIE framework by identifying forms of colonial capitalism that do not resolve into a stylised opposition between inclusion and extraction. Colonial slavery, commercial imperialism, and settler colonialism strain the inclusive/extractive binary by highlighting (1) the interdependence of inclusive and extractive institutions in imperial networks accumulation, and (2) the violent expropriations at the origins of inclusive institutions, above all private property. Proposing to view NIE's critique of colonialism as a 'liberal critique of capitalist unevenness', the article concludes on broader questions about inclusion and exclusion under 'actually existing capitalism'.

This research project explores the colonial hegemony and pedagogical contradictions imbedded within the process of collective-national identity development among Palestinian students in the Israeli formal educational system through inductive examination of the dialectical interplay between the three agents of the formal educational process; namely, the formal curriculum, the students and the teachers. The study utilised Grounded Theory (Glaser & Strauss, 1967) as a qualitative research method and used three sets of data: (a) the formal curriculum of history used in grades 7-12 in Palestinian schools in Israel, (b) in-depth qualitative interviews with 7 History Palestinian teachers who are officially employed by the Israeli government and teach Palestinian students in the segregated Palestinian schools in Israel, (c) in-depth interviews with 14 Palestinian college students who are graduates of this formal educational system. The three sets of data were analysed separately, then compared and contrasted to depict an overall picture of the findings of the study

Capitalists and labourers have long been regarded among the great antagonists of Australian historiography. Yet where the latter has been subjected to constant analysis by successive generations of historians, the formation of 'the capitalist' has received scant attention. This article reassesses this figure as a discrete colonial type, not as the ubiquitous owner of the means of production, but as a conflicted and contested subject of imperial transformation. By layering a series of perspectives on the capitalist as a category of government, a model of calculative skill and parsimonious morality, as a contested popular discourse, and whose relations were structured by the 'inherent hierarchy of money', this reassessment also offers fresh perspectives on the processes of settler capitalism. It highlights the social, political and technological linkages that promoted valuation, investment and wealth accumulation as intrinsic to Australian settlement and the credit-money relations that made settler expansion dynamic but fragile.

The present study is an endeavor to explore the unrevealed colonial history of oppression and immigration in nineteenth century India, presented in Amitav Ghosh's Sea of Poppies, the first volume of Ibis trilogy. Colonization, a system of political, economic, psychological and cultural domination, always gives birth to a pattern of cultural and political marginalization of the colonized country. Colonial or imperial rule is a situation which in terms of the relationship between indigenous peoples and the colonizers means a consistently maintained distance and difference. Colonialism attains a historical specificity, noting particularly the impact it had and continues to have on all societies across the world. Amitav Ghosh is a novelist with an extraordinary sense of history and place. He is a contemporary IndianEnglish novelist like Salman Rushdie, Shashi Tharoor, Vikram Seth, Mukul Kessavan, Gita Mehta, Allen Sealy etc., who combines his professional skills as social historian with literary flair to create works of art, concerned with civilization and history. Ghosh's novels probe the ideology of colonialism in its various shades. The heroes and heroines of Ghosh's novels are the native of India, Burma, Malaya, South Africa and Ghosh narrates the tragedy and triumph of these people against the backdrop of colonial history. His novels are considered 'meditation on colonialism' concentrating unexplored underbelly of the British Empire. This article discusses how language textbooks may be fruitful for the study of popular geopolitics. It contains a comparative analysis of two textbooks used in lower secondary education in Denmark: A Piece of Cake and Français Formidable. Their representations of the world and their narratives of colonial history are very different in many respects (apart from the obvious differences related to the different geographical areas affected by British and French colonialism). In particular, their treatment of Africa is very different. The analysis draws on my book from 2018: Representations of the World in Language Textbooks. That book presents and implements a number of different theoretical approaches to the analysis of representations of the world (the entire planet) in language textbooks. Among them are the following, which are also used in this article: national studies (which countries are represented in the textbook?), transnational studies (which transnational connections are represented?) and postcolonial studies (is history, particularly (post)colonial history, represented?). In addition to the comparison itself, the article discusses the possible reasons behind the two different narratives of the world and world history. Generally, the analysis shows that it is important to be aware of the differences among the various languages in which popular geopolitics is modelled. Languages are differently positioned in the global linguistic landscape that has developed as a result of world history, and there are also different political perspectives on that.

This article explores the exhibition history of decorative shell-art objects made by Aboriginal women in southeast Australia since the late Victorian era. Although produced for over a century, Aboriginal women's 'shellwork' (as it is known) has only recently received sustained curatorial attention. During the last few decades it has been acquired by private and public collectors and exhibited in both small independent and major public art galleries and museums. The article uses the contemporary curatorial interest in Aboriginal women's shellwork as an occasion to trace a longer history of its exhibition and display. A historical view reveals the 'cultural', 'aesthetic' and 'political' work that these objects performed as they were displayed in ways designed to communicate messages about their makers and to mediate social relations under colonial conditions. Earlier histories of display and its rhetorical functions are often lost, ignored or downplayed when Aboriginal women's shellwork is exhibited within contemporary exhibition spaces; but the author suggests that there is more continuity between old and new display cultures and practices than is generally acknowledged. In light of this, the article argues for greater recognition of earlier histories of display practices and visual rhetorics to inform the contemporary interpretation and exhibition of these objects. The article concludes with a recent installation of Aboriginal women's shellwork that is suggestive of this approach.

South Africa's political ordering was, thus, naturalised through nationalist 'natures' where settlers could perform their dominance over natives and their belonging in their fledgling nations. Post apartheid, Njabulo Ndebele (1999) saw game lodges as offering white South Africans a taste of colonial power and belonging, but having the opposite effect on black South Africans. For Ndebele, recomposing 'natural' spaces is fundamental to how South Africans come to belong (or not) in post-apartheid South Africa. Drawing from interview and ethnographic data, I show that contemporary biltong hunting 'nature' is an assemblage of humans and non-humans composed around a concern with how Afrikaner nationalist masculinities might belong (or not) in a post-apartheid context. I argue hunting 'nature' is a commodity that, anchors a past nationalist masculine hierarchy in a reciprocal relationship to game on privately owned land and collapses belonging into ownership.

On 21 May 2014 Circassians all over the world marked the 150th anniversary of the expulsion of their ancestors from their North Caucasian homeland. The links between this unresolved legacy of Russian colonial history and President Putin's prestigious Winter Olympics in Sochi have reinvigorated Circassian activism. While different objectives and methods coexist within the movement, the demand for acknowledgement of the wrongs inflicted on their forebears is shared by both the remaining Circassian population in the North Caucasus and Russia (about 700,000) and the worldwide diaspora (several million). Gracias a esta proliferación de investigaciones de nuevo cuño se ha logrado superar la imagen tradicional que se tenía de aquella época, derivada principalmente de las crónicas y relaciones de gobierno, limitadas a reseñar los acontecimientos más importantes de carácter político y militar (historia externa); ahora podemos conocer también los móviles que determinaban la actuación de los funcionarios administrativos, el impacto que ejercían las medidas gubernativas entre los diversos estamentos de la sociedad colonial y la paulatina gestación de un movimiento tendente a la ruptura del dominio hispánico, entre otros aspectos (historia interna). A fin de ilustrar las vertientes más novedodas dentro de la historiografía del Perú colonial, y con la intención de orientar en la pesquisa bibliográfica a los estudiosos de nuestro país, presentamos en este ensayo una relación de artículos concernientes a dicha materia editados en publicaciones periódicas del extranjero durante el último sexenio: de 1978 a 1984.

Most people studying American History learn at an early age that the "Thirteen Colonies" revolted in 1775 and after eight long hard years won their independence with the Treaty of Paris in 1783. What most of them weren't taught is that the British actually founded 14 colonies on the Atlantic coastline of North America. Twelve colonies were founded in the 1600s, the 13th colony, Georgia, was not settled until 1733, a void of sixty three years. The 14th and last was Nova Scotia founded in 1749. The American Revolution not only created one country but two: The United States of America and British North America, later Canada. This event was followed by a great influx of refugees from South to North, a displacement of people among equals, who either did not want to live in a different state or with a different allegiance or were forced to leave because of its convictions.
