The paper offers a contribution to the interdisciplinary constructs of analyzing fairness issues in automatic algorithmic decisions. Section 1 shows that technical choices in supervised learning have social implications that need to be considered. Section 2 proposes a contextual approach to the issue of unintended group discrimination, i.e. decision rules that are facially neutral but generate disproportionate impacts across social groups (e.g., gender, race or ethnicity). The contextualization will focus on the legal systems of the United States on the one hand and Europe on the other. In particular, legislation and case law tend to promote different standards of fairness on both sides of the Atlantic. Section 3 is devoted to the explainability of algorithmic decisions; it will confront and attempt to cross-reference legal concepts (in European and French law) with technical concepts and will highlight the plurality, even polysemy, of European and French legal texts relating to the explicability of algorithmic decisions.

International audience ; This paper introduces a way of studying science fiction works using mathematical methods grounded in graph theory. Our approach combines close and distant reading in order to describe the structural roles of characters, as they appear in the network built from their co-occurrences in the text. This study includes three main results. The first consists in the introduction of « middle reading », a method combining close and distant reading to analyze character systems in works of fiction. It relies on network visualization together with mathematical concepts like centrality or cluster detection. The second result consists in a typology of the works composing the corpus, based on the structure of their character networks. The third result is a reading proposal based on character qualification as scientist, technician or politician. This approach adds a dimension to these characters networks, thus allowing a richer interpretation of characters systems.

The third generation of Social Sciences currently emerging must assume the specific nature of the world of data created by digital networks, without falling back on the Sciences of «Society» or «opinion.» All of these entities were constructed in specific political, institutional situations and with specific techniques. «Social» Big Data is taken into account by agencies specializing in the processing of this data to produce potentially predictive correlations primarily for the benefit of brands. The risk is that the Social Sciences would be lastingly disqualified from producing reflexivity that has hitherto been their raison d'être. Beyond «society» and «opinion» for which the text lays out a genealogy, appear the «traces» that must be theorized as «vibrations» by the Social Sciences in order to reap the benefits of the uncertain status of entities' widespread traceability.

International audience ; Open science is commonly discussed within our institutions. National plans have been initiated by the government and this issue raises a lot of questions. The science implies several principles: transparency, reproducibility, efficiency, trust sobriety, sustainability. Its application thus passes by the opening of the data, but also the opening of the software and the free access to the publications. software and free access to scientific publications. Although sometimes experienced as a constraint, it appears that in the majority of situations, its application within public organizations can only be beneficial, whether it is for the initiators of the dynamics, the funding organizations or more generally for our communities. In the LEGI laboratory, this scientific strategy was initiated more than two decades ago. The initial objective was to share the experimental data obtained in the CORIOLIS platform, a major research instrument of the CNRS, in accordance with the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles. Then, over time, some of the scientific computing experts of the unit followed the movement, sharing modeling data, but also software. The reproducibility of the laboratory's activities has thus improved and a methodology has been defined. These steps have been successful. However, the opening of data, software and publications is confronted with practical obstacles, financial problems and certain reticence. Incentive charters are surely needed to make scientific communities more considerate of open science. The CNRS open data plan and the European initiative RDA (Research Data Alliance) represent interesting advances. It would also be useful if the use and availability of open data and software could be valorized.
