El articulo ofrece una revisión histórica, de fuentes primarias y secundarias, sobre la Sociedad Democrática de Artesanos de Bogotá y la sociabilidad, moderna y promovida por el liberalismo, que esta generó durante treinta años del siglo XIX, enfatizando en el carácter popular, como en las distintas reacciones, del conservatismo, la Iglesia, y las élites liberales, para contrarrestar su influencia, lo que se evidenció en unos iniciales intentos, hacia 1838-1839; en una etapa de expansión y efectiva determinación, política, social, y cultural, aunque con divisiones, entre 1845-1854; una diversificación de la sociabilidad democrática, entre 1855 a 1876, sin tanto protagonismo político, con carácter ora secreto, ora abierto, a veces notoriamente político, otras con intereses específicos y definidos. La pregunta central gira en torno a ¿sí la Sociedad Democrática de Artesanos logró promover una sociabilidad moderna dentro de los sectores populares de Bogotá? La respuesta es positiva, y se basa en la documentación y en la literatura escrita sobre el tema. Abstract The article presents a historical review of primary and secondary sources concerning the Sociedad Democrática de Artesanos de Bogotá and its modern sociability promoted by liberalism. Sociability generated during thirty years of the nineteenth century, emphasizing its popular character as differents reactions to conservatism, the Church, and liberal elites to counter their influence which was evident in some initial attempts during 1838-1839; in a period of political, social, and cultural expansion and effective determination, but with divisions between 1845-1854; a diversification of a democratic sociability, between 1855-1876 without much political prominence, sometimes secretly, sometimes openly, sometimes notoriously political, and others with specific and defined interests. The central issue revolves around whether the Sociedad Democrática de Artesanos succeeded in promoting a modern sociability within the working class of Bogotá? The answer is yes, ...
