After Debord

This short essay considers media events in culture, turning toward the poststructuralist moment of spectacle as performance. I especially consider how images consolidate power. Employing a Debordian theoretical framework, I work to make sense of the importance of scrutinizing the content and context in which images are placed in the media environment.

Debord desbordado: la política del hiperespectáculo. / Overflowed debord: politics of hyperspectacle
La hipermediación ha reconfigurado la relación entre cultura, poder y tecnologías digitales, abriendo paso a una política hiperreal y vacía; una nueva forma de representación que se evidencia claramente en nuestro continente y el mundo: el hiperespectáculo.ABSTRACT 25 years after his death, the thought of Guy Debord deserves to be revisited, this time in conditions that may represent a validity test for The Society of the Spectacle (1967), the effervescence of May 68 and industrial capitalism's radical criticism. This article supports the idea that today, the Debordian spectacle is not enough to understand the impact of a hyperconnected spectacle. Hypermediation has reconfigured the relationship between culture, power and digital technologies, opening the way to hyperreal and meaningless politics; a new form of representation that is clearly evident in our continent and the world -the hyperspectacle.

Guy Debord et l'anarchisme
In: Revue française d'histoire des idées politiques, Band 55, Heft 1, S. 15-34
ISSN: 2119-3851
