In October 2020, a ruling by Poland's Constitutional Tribunal effectively ending legal abortion incited mass protests across the country. Despite the demonstrations being directed at both the government and the Catholic Church, many devout Catholics joined the protests against the Church's opposition to family planning being enacted through state-imposed prohibition. Drawing on ongoing archival and ethnographic research, in this paper we address a number of issues relating to Catholicism and abortion: how it is possible that so many Catholics decided to take part in pro-choice marches openly opposing official Catholic teaching on birth control? What were their motivations?
Opole demonstrations in defense of democracy Opole is a provincial city of the smallest region in the country. Nevertheless, its inhabitants manifest their views on matters important from their point of view. The analysis of the largest protests in recent years in this region shows that the inhabitants of Opole most often and loudly demonstrate in defense of democracy – both at the national and local level. In the chapter Opole demonstrations in defense of democracy, Katarzyna Daniel proposes an analysis of two problems that caused Opole inhabitants to take to the streets, i.e. protests in defense of the broadly understood judiciary initiated in 2017 and demonstrations and strikes caused by the enlargement of the administrative borders of the city of Opole on January 1, 2017. Cyclical demonstrations in many cities grew stronger when changes were proposed regarding, inter alia, election of members of the National Council of the Judiciary by the Seym by a simple majority, introduction of disciplinary liability of judges, or retirement of the First President of the Supreme Court during an uninterrupted six-year term of office in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Poland. On the other hand, the cause of numerous demonstrations in Opole was frustration related to the disregard for the voice of the inhabitants regarding the enlargement of the city (over 90% responded negatively in social consultations). The opponents of the enlargement of Opole believed that the incorporation of their communes was done by force, against the local community, for reasons that were not entirely purely moral. The most active were the inhabitants of the Dobrzeń Wielki commune, who, along with other demonstrators, expressed their dissatisfaction in the form of: numerous demonstrations, collecting signatures on letters opposing the enlargement of Opole, high activity in public consultations, road blockades, a protest in Warsaw, meetings with journalists and local government officials, politicians or a hunger strike. These ...
Nowe, poszerzone wydanie albumu dokumentującego transparenty osób uczestniczących w masowych demonstracjach z października i listopada 2020 r.
The changes occurring in countries of Central and Eastern Europe after 1945 deprived young people of their subjectivity, divested them of the possibility of legal activities outside the structures controlled by the rulers. Simultaneously, the activities taken by the latter threatened the values which were fundamental for the most of them. Some of young people attempted – more or less – to engage in active resistance, usually determined axiologically. It took, among other things, the form of refusal to participate in official youth organisations while staying in religious communities. Some also publicly expressed their oppositions in the form of participation in street demonstrations. Others joined the anti-communist underground or established their own underground groups. Young people's anti-system attitudes were discussed on the examples of Belarus, Estonia, Czechoslovakia, Lithuania, Latvia, the German Democratic Republic and Ukraine.
This essay investigates mutual relations between China, Russia and Ukraine during the five month groundbreaking period between November 2013 and March 2014, in which failed attempts to suppress anti-government demonstrations (in particular in the so-called Maidan) brought about a change of the government. Meanwhile Russia, taking advantage of political instability in Ukraine, contributed to further destabilization of the country and forced the annexation of Crimea. The essay features an account of these events along with an overview of the PRC's stand on them. The utterances of Chinese diplomats together with government press statements will be scrutinized here in order to answer the questions of whether Beijing intends to get more involved in solving world's crises than it used to up until now as well as whether it means to play a major role in the world's politics in general.

This article deals with the Western countries reaction on "Arab Spring" phenomenon (a revolutionary wave of demonstration and protests against the power of country), especially the United States, Germany and France. The selection of countries was based on the following criteria: first of all, the US is a major power in the World and a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organization; secondly, France and Germany are main European players due to European Union membership. Additionally, France maintains good relations with North African countries, while Germany is more neutral and represents economic power within the European continent, which might gain the trust of Arabic World.
; The author analyses Poland's (relative) research and development position among EU member countries. He indicates that Poland is among EU countries making very slow scientific progress which is caused, first and foremost, by low R&D intensity and limited involvement of businesses in financing R&D. The limited scope of scientific cooperation between businesses and universities, the insufficient participation of Polish scientific institutions in the EU Framework Programme for Research, technological development and demonstration activities, as well as multiple employment (of scientists and researchers) are other reasons. Given Poland's extremely weak position in the area of R&D, extensive reforms have been made. They will not significantly strengthen Poland's R&D status, however, because this depends on the attitude of businesses to supporting R&D.
The paper discusses the social and political situation in the Katowice Voivodeship in December 1970 after the announcement of the increase in food prices, prevention and order activities undertaken by the Citizens' Militia (MO) and the security apparatus during the crisis and the reaction of the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) to the growing agitation of society. Despite mounting tension, reinforced by the news of workers' revolt in the cities of the Coast, the police forces effectively paralysed weak attempts to stir up strikes and demonstrations in the Katowice Voivodeship. Political changes in the PZPR leadership prevented the crisis from escalating. The attitudes of the region's inhabitants were also influenced by: the strong position of the PZPR, the preventive arrest of nearly a thousand potential leaders of protests and riots, relatively good living conditions in the Katowice Voivodeship, and the divergent interests of various groups of the province's population. Mimo narastającego napięcia, wzmacnianego przez wieści o robotniczej rewolcie w miastach Wybrzeża, siły policyjne skutecznie paraliżowały słabe próby wzniecenia strajków i manifestacji w województwie katowickim. Polityczne zmiany w kierownictwie PZPR zapobiegły eskalacji kryzysu. Na postawy mieszkańców regionu wpłynęły ponadto: silna pozycja PZPR, prewencyjne aresztowanie blisko tysiąca potencjalnych liderów protestów i zamieszek, relatywnie nie najgorsze warunki życia w województwie katowickim, rozbieżne interesy różnych grup ludności województwa.

The Western states and their international institutions (the European Union and NATO) followed the liberal ideology in the 21st century to continue the policy of promoting democracy, the rule of law, human rights and market economy towards the former communist states in the Western Balkans and the former USSR. The biggest impediment to their policy is Russia, which believes that Western states are actually pursuing the goals of extending their sphere of influence and compromising its security interests. The biggest confrontation between the West and Russia took place in 2014 in Ukraine, when the EU and the USA supported the pro-Western aspirations of the new authorities of the country, which emerged as a result of several months of street demonstrations in Kyiv. The Ukraine crisis has caused difficulties in international cooperation and deterioration of international security in the Euro-Atlantic zone.

The article analyses the political attitudes and behaviours of the citizens, and describes the content and dynamics of the changes occurring due to the evolution of the Polish political system. The analysis of political participation by Polish citizens is presented in relation to the theoretical construct of social attitudes as a foundation of democracy, as proposed by Dahl. In the context of society's approach to democracy and trust in institutions, a comparative analysis has been presented of voter participation in subsequent parliamentary and local elections. The process of creating a civil society, including the various forms of participation in non-governmental organisations, has been presented in relation to attitudes such as cooperation, social trust and care for the common good.In order to illustrate the egocentric and particularistic attitudes, the activities of citizens involved in the politics of protest have been analysed. Recent years have seen a number of demonstrations; symbolic in nature and testimony to certain principles, which have been used here as material for the analysis of the ideological approach to political problems. To sum up the problem of political participation of Polish citizens, it can be said that the dynamics of the forms and content of political participation indicates a growing involvement of citizens in the governance process, which definitely makes a positive contribution to the development of democracy. It must be noted, however, that the political activity of a large part of society has not been motivated by pro-democratic attitudes. The high diversification, disparity and instability of attitudes translate into the forms and content of political participation. ; Artykuł zawiera analizę postaw i zachowań politycznych obywateli, opis ich treści i dynamiki zmian zachodzących pod wpływem ewolucji polskiego systemu politycznego. Analizę partycypacji politycznej Polaków przedstawiono w odniesieniu do teoretycznego konstruktu postaw społecznych leżących u podstaw demokracji, zaproponowanego przez R. Dahla. W kontekście stosunku społeczeństwa do demokracji i zaufania do instytucji przedstawiono analizę porównawczą partycypacji wyborczej w kolejnych wyborach parlamentarnych i samorządowych. Proces kreowania społeczeństwa obywatelskiego – różne formy uczestnictwa w organizacjach pozarządowych przedstawiono w odniesieniu do postaw współdziałania, zaufania społecznego i dbałości o wspólne dobro.Dla ilustracji postaw egocentrycznych i partykularnych grupowych dokonano analizy działań obywateli uczestniczących w polityce protestu. Liczne demonstracje, jakie miały miejsce w ostatnich latach o znaczeniu symbolicznym, stanowiące wyraz dawania świadectwa wartościom posłużyły jako materiał do analizy ideologicznego stosunku do problemów politycznych.Podsumowując problem partycypacji politycznej Polaków można stwierdzić, iż dynamika form i treści partycypacji politycznej świadczą o pogłębiającym się uczestnictwie obywateli w procesie rządzenia państwem, co niewątpliwie stanowi pozytywny aspekt rozwoju demokracji. Zauważyć jednakże należy, że u podstaw aktywności politycznej znacznej części społeczeństwa nie leżą postawy sprzyjające demokracji. Silne zróżnicowanie, niespójność i chwiejność postaw przekłada się na formy i treść partycypacji politycznej.
