This paper compares deprogramming with exorcism, thought reform, and resocialization, and offers insight into how members of the anticult movement justify their own involvement in "coercive conversion." It serves as a fitting, if ironic, close to this issue on conversion and commitment in contemporary religion.

Using never-before-reported data on CAN's activities, the authors cite an extensive history of financial impropriety that finally led to the organization's bankruptcy. They offer a pointed critique, informed by current scholarship, of the ""brainwashing"" model of mental enslavement presented by the anticult movement that has been a central assumption undergirding its activities. At the same time, they show how increasing professionalization has gradually begun a shift of such movements to a therapeutic model of exit counseling that rejects the crude methods of earlier intervention strategies

The operation of some cults and the 'deprogramming' of cult members are both held to be suspect. An examination of the broad characteristics, motivations and backgrounds of cult members reveals links with the authoritarian justifications of their 'rescuers'.—Ed.

This paper looks at the appearance in Australia of 'deprogramming' (brainwashing) methods and the misuse of psychological techniques against cults. It is suggested that the misuse of such techniques is more dangerous and constitutes a greater threat to civil liberties than the cults themselves, and possibilities for action by psychologists are discussed.

This volume offers a feminist critique of counter- and deradicalization programs, including those under the umbrella of 'preventing and countering violent extremism.' Based on insights from five countries and examples from elsewhere, the text shows how, collectively, efforts rely on particular narratives of agency, security, and human rights. Putting gender at the centre of the analysis reveals significant limitations in antiradicalization work-in construction, operation, and evaluation.
