Using archival evidence from Britain & France, & published primary & secondary literature, this article offers a reassessment of Britain's role in Cambodia during liberation duties following World War II. Britain's actions in the removal of the Son Ngoc Thanh nationalist government & the Cambodian-Siamese border dispute are analysed, revealing both a more complex & detailed British involvement in Cambodian affairs than has previously been stated. This article, substantially based on archival sources, aims to rehabilitate diplomatic history as a mode of enquiry & education using the insights & reflections of Sir Herbert Butterfield, one of the leading historians of the twentieth century. Integrated with developments in theory, methodology & new areas of inquiry over the past generation, his thoughts, it will be argued, can inform the tenets of a revitalized diplomatic history -- one that fulfills the promise of its founding scholars & one that reclaims its place at the forefront of historical scholarship: a corrective to some of our present academic priorities.
