When it was originally published in 1986, this was the first book to deal simultaneously with several aspects of social welfare provision in a developing country. The unique contribution of the book is based on the analysis of 3 substantive welfare areas - land (for self-help housing), urban infrastructure and health - which are examined in terms of the nature, motivation and effectiveness of government intervention. The book covers 3 administrations between 1970 and the mid-1980s and sets the analysis in the wider context of Latin American affairs. The author shows that although social welfare expenditure has increased, its importance as a government priority has been sharply eroded.

Annotation, For almost three decades, the European Union (EU) has adopted measures to regulate consumer transactions within the internal market created by the EU Treaties. Existing legislation is largely based on directives harmonizing aspects of national consumer laws. This Brief argues that a more appropriate approach for EU consumer law would be legislation in the form of a regulation which is applicable to cross-border transactions only. The author considers the constitutional constraints of the EU Treaties, before examining the case for a cross-border-only measure. He argues that the cross-border approach is preferable, because it would provide clearer benefits for consumers seeking to buy goods and services across borders, while not upsetting domestic law unnecessarilyin particular in the context of e-commerce, with implications for industry, policymaking, and regional development. The Brief concludes by suggesting that a successful EU measure on cross-border consumer transactions could create a template for global initiatives for transnational consumer law

This is an in-depth investigation into data-science driving the economic model of new media and the effects it has had on contemporary journalism. The paradigm shift from the subscription-based economy of 20th century journalism to the link-economy of new media, has replaced financial structure needed to support investigative journalism with a structure of information inflation based on algorithmically fed sensationalism. The empirical data-science put forth by Facebook combined with tested socio-psychological science provide a clear understanding of how new media influences social structures and divides in the contemporary social landscape of the United States. It further illustrates how these platforms have been built to manipulate and secure a predictive behavioral response patterns of media users, whether it is to buy a product or secure a vote from the electorate. Edward Bernays' use of Propaganda and Albert Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory provide direct examples of the socio-psychological effects of media manipulation in the 20th century. Understanding these proven methodologies in combination with media consumption individually optimized through Big-Five Psychological modeling and Solomon Asch' s experiments of conformity prov ides a clear perspective on the influence new media platforms have on the social structure of the 21 st century. I go further to reveal how this model can be exploited for political and economic gain. I then use examples from the 2016 presidential campaign to explain the psychological warfare techniques of influence deployed by Robert Mercer, Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, and the Russian Government. The data-science tools of neoliberal consumerism and new media are being exploited to disseminate propaganda to manufacture consent and discontent in the social media user base, while the aggregation algorithms inflated with false information reinforce an ideological polarized binary of political factions. This creates a social structure of instability which will require regulation or will result as threat to Western Democracy.
The term money currently refers to various modifications of the money forms, which historically have undergone their process of development. Applying the analytical, comparative, and historical method, the present article aims to identify the essential developmental aspects of the institution of money (term's content, functions, role, appearance/forms, interactions, legal aspects) in the context of their operation in the economic system with a pro futuro view focusing on the territory of Slovakia. The authors studied and analysed information from domestic and foreign sources, paying particular attention to the historical development of the form of money and currency formation predominantly in Slovakia. The authors conclude that today's money has lost its historical fundamental economic properties and raise the question whether it is only its other dimensions (psychological, political, technological, and others) that have prevailed.
