Scholarly studies of elites and political elites have a vibrant recent history. My aim here is to provide a selective summary of that history, focusing on the importance of social distinction and the theories of power structure as a theoretical background for understanding the influence of political elites in social change. Since new insights and concerns have emerged in this field, the organization of this essay is not entirely chronological. Even though I may have ignored many relevant contributions, my hope here is to provide some sense of the richness and significance of what have been accomplished by scholars regarding the relationship among elites and representation, the links between elites, democracy and social change and the theories of power structure. In this paper I also study the extent to which the introduction of a new research method by Domhoffian class domination theory opened a new insight in élite studies. Finally, an élite research strategy and two main conclusions are presented subsequently.

; This collective biographical study explores the social structural characteristics of historical Croatian and Serbian elites by examining the geographical and social origin as well as the education of 136 members of the political and cultural elites born between 1875 and 1928. For the interwar political elite and the cultural elites it can be stated, that they frequently originate from the central and urban areas where the modernisation of Croatian and Serbian society is the most advanced. It is striking that the geographical and social origin of the Croatian elite is far more heterogenous than the urban and bourgeois background of their Serbian counterparts. Regardless of their regional affiliation, a high level of education reveals to be a central criterion in the obtainment of elite status. Contrary to the traditional political and cultural elite groups, the educational level of the communist political elite in the postwar period is generally lower and their origin appears to be less influenced by the socio-economic conditions of their environment. This can be ascribed to the break with traditional patterns of elite recruitment. Nevertheless, also within the communist elite different biographical patterns can be distinguished. Biographical variations can also be attributed to the generational affiliation of elite members. However, the main differences regarding the socio-economic characteristics of the elite seem to be conditioned by regional origin and the belonging to different elite groups. In general, the collective biographical structure of the historical elite reveals to be closely connected to the social historical development of the Serbian and Croatian territories. Technically a soc elite is a stratum of a pop occupying a position of superiority & influence. The superiority may rest on tradition, on special acquired skills & talents, & on a general body of skills & talents of all kinds. An elite is characterized by corporateness, exclusiveness, & always refers to a plurality of people. Its superiority must be of a very generalized kind extending beyond the mere possession of wealth or of educ, for example. In addition, the superior quality of elites must be imitable & worth imitating. It functions as a model & standard of what is proper & preferable in its society. Even specialized elites, as an elite of wealth, tends to set generalized standards, say, as regards moral, & pol'al beliefs. The imitableness may refer to these spill-over qualities rather than to the special quality giving origin tothe elite. A society may contain a number of elites. These may fall into a hierarchy. When they do not, their mutual rivalries & conflicting ideals may become a crucial problem. A gov class is not by itself the. pre-eiminent elite. Most interesting in the study of elites is their process of emergence. Elites tend to become rigid 4 thus, carry the seeds of their own decay. The cycle of transformation from growth to rigidity or from vitality to decay in a society may be studied indirectly through the study of elites. B. J. Keeley.
