; This diploma thesis aims to capture the stylistic and programmatic complexity of The Slavic Epic (1911-1928) by the painter Alfons Mucha. The main focus is placed on an Art Historical Analysis of the twenty monumental paintings. Besides the Analysis of the main stylistic means and motives this thesis concentrates on distinguishing the art historic importance of the work by comparing the cycle of paintings to the innovative tendencies that ocurred in the art scene shortly before Mucha started working on the Slavic Epic. In addition the influence of Symbolism and historical painting on Muchas work should be detected on the basis of the symbolisitic and historical content of the paintings. Given that the artist was concentrating on the artistic presentation of History and the production of cycle of paintings already before 1911 the focus is in particular placed on four works that Mucha crafted between 1898 and 1910 and that stylistically and programmatically lead the way to the Slavic Epic. Furthermore the paintings are to be related to the political situation in the 19th century Austrian Empire. The suppression of the slavic tribes through the germanspeaking population strengthend Muchas desire to commission his work to the slavic people. In this context it were the panslavistic and austroslavistic movements that had great influence on Mucha who is presenting similar ideas through the Slavic Epic. Further more, the cycle of paintings reflects the importance of art in the process of forming national identites. Focusing on mutual cultural accomplishments in this process is characteristic of Eastern Europe.
