Within the field of anthropology, there is a comprehensive linguistic sub-discipline which deals with issues from semiotics and linguistics to identity and intangible cultural heritage. This special volume of AJEC emerged from our desire to explore that sub-discipline in a European context. From our perspective, it appears that many anthropologists in and of Europe engage with a variety of questions within the sub-discipline. However, these anthropologists are not necessarily located in anthropology departments. Furthermore, their expertise is not necessarily profiled in anthropological journals. This is in sharp contrast with the U.S.A. where the significance of language in the field of anthropology is more clearly defined and profiled.

For good reasons, anthropology some decades ago deconstructed the Mediterraneanist picture of familialist societies in the South. However, this deconstruction unexpectedly had its political twin in Malta's fight against corruption to meet the conditions for EU-membership in 2004. Drawing on a deeper concept of "territoriality", introduced by anthropologist Ina-Maria Greverus, the article considers lately observed new variants of nationalist positions that paradoxically are deeply entwined with clientelistic dynamics against the state, culminating in the recent murder of critical journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The book under review is an important collection of essays on anthropological traditions in Europe. The subject of "European Anthropologies" has been on the agenda at least since the special issue of Ethnos on "The Shaping of National Anthropologies" (1982) and Ulf Hannerz and Tomas Gerholm's introductory article. It but gained new urgency since the Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the rise of neoliberalism and global capitalism. Long in the making, but well worth the wait, the book is based on conferences held in Paris (2007) and Madrid (2008), aimed at reviewing "Anthropology in Europe" - defined as both "sociocultural anthropology and ethnology." Under the broad rubric of "facing the challenges of European convergence in higher education and research," the book brings together eleven chapters on anthropology and ethnology in Portugal, Germany, Russia, Italy, France, Finland, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Croatia, and Greece.
