De geschiedenis van Europa en de omgang met het verleden in Europa zijn het voorwerp van recente initiatieven en controverses en dit op een moment dat het Europese project in crisis lijkt te zijn. In welk narratief de Europese geschiedenis ook wordt gegoten, het lokt altijd politieke en emotionele reacties en veelvormige debatten uit. Het Huis van Europese Geschiedenis (HEH) dat in mei 2017 zijn deuren opende, wordt als een transnationale ruimte beschouwd, ook al is ons referentiekader, ondanks alle kritiek hierop, nog steeds sterk nationaal van aard. Hoe moeten we dit nieuwe museum beoordelen? In welke mate verwijst het naar nationale geschiedenis? En is er een dialoog mogelijk tussen twee uiteenlopende initiatieven, namelijk tussen het HEH en het BELvue museum waarin de Belgische geschiedenis centraal staat? Dit artikel maakt deel uit van het forum 'The House of European History'. The history of Europe and history in Europe are the focus of recent initiatives and controversies, at a time when the European project appears to be in a state of crisis.[1] Fashioning the history of Europe into a narrative in any format instigates political and emotional reactions. The resulting discussions convey the variegated public debate. The House of European History (HEH), which opened in May 2017, is first and foremost conceived as a transnational space,[2] even though our frame of reference, notwithstanding our efforts, continues to be defined by a national approach. How should we consider this new museum? To what extent does it refer to national history? Would dialogue be feasible between two initiatives as distinct as the HEH and the BELvue museum, which highlights Belgian history?[1] See especially the beautiful book Europa. Notre Histoire. This book explores the relationship between citizenship and civism through a general survey of European history. It begins with an exploration of the dynamics of citizenship and civism in the formative Neolithic and classical societies, followed by an exploration of the middle ages, renaissance, reformation, and the enlightenment. The latter half of the book focuses on the rise of the modern nation-state following the French Revolution. European history is an exciting mesh of interrelated facts and events, crossing countries and cultures. However, historic knowledge is usually presented to the non-specialist public (museum or city visitors) in a siloed, simplistic and localised manner. In CrossCult, an H2020-funded EU project that started in 2016, we aim to change this. With an interdisciplinary consortium of 11 partners, from seven European countries we are developing technologies to help answer two intrinsically united humanities challenges. ; The CROSSCULT project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 693150

History, and in particular European history, is not merely a collection of unconnected events, but rather a complex mesh of interrelated facts, events and concepts, taking place within a wider context of previous and contemporary situations. Unfortunately when addressing the wider public, like in schools, museums and cultural spaces, history is often presented in a simplistic, siloed and localistic manner that promotes memorizing rather than understanding, does not account for cross-border cultural aspects and prevents historical events from being viewed as a shared, global experience. The goal of the CrossCult H2020 project, comprising 11 partners from 7 European countries, is to spur a change in the way European citizens appraise, interpret and access history, by enabling new and highlighting existing cross-border connections among pieces of cultural heritage, other citizens' viewpoints and physical venues. Facilitated by technology and mobile applications, with a strong background in social sciences, the project focuses on developing pilot experiences that build narratives of cross-border connections and crosscutting topics, to help visitors gain insight into how the same facts may be interpreted differently from different social realities and by different individuals. In this paper we introduce the CrossCult project and its goals, provide an overview of its four project pilots and discuss the technologies it employs to connect cultural heritage venues, repositories and people's viewpoints.

This work is concentrating on the history and various aspects of Freemasonry in Eastern Europe. Questions such as how it influenced education, politics, and culture there are answered with the help of various materials and disputation-based analysis. The book is opening Freemasonry in Ukraine, Russia, and Poland to English-speaking readers. Many aspects of the 1917 Russian Revolution, the Ukrainian People's Republic, Polish independence movement are included as the main points of focus. Masonic relations to these events were often very evident and needed to be discussed with a lot of attention. Additionally, this research is disproving many conspiracies related to Freemasonry.

Concerned about the EU's apparent lack of cultural legitimacy, EU institutions have increasingly engaged in the transnational politics of history to enhance European identity and foster EU legitimacy. The House of European History museum project in Brussels marks a high point in the European Parliament's history politics. Based on document analysis and interviews, an analysis of the project's origins and evolution highlights the narrow limits of cultural engineering from above, by EU institutions, however. The constraining dissensus in EU politics has forced the European Parliament to rely entirely on the curators and professional historians to legitimize its museum as one that conforms to prevailing curatorial and historical standards. As a result, the first permanent exhibition differs markedly from the original plan. Its narrative has become East Europeanized and the history of European integration proper has been marginalized.

[EN] EHISTO (European history crossroads as pathways to intercultural and media education) is concerned with the mediation of history in popular (science) media and the question of social and political responsibility of journalists and other mediators of history, especially teachers, in the field of commercial presentation of history. The project responds to the increasing significance of a commercialised mediation of history within the public historical culture and reflects the fact that these representations, which do not always meet the EU standards for history education, can have a lasting impact on the young generation's understanding of history. Using the example of popular history magazines, the project shall, besides the necessary basic research, develop didactically reflected materials for both history education in school as well as initial and in-service teacher training. On one hand enable a media-critical examination of history magazines and on the other hand, by working with the history magazines, the project addresses itself to popular interpretations of history from the participating countries and reflects their similarities and differences in European cultures of remembrance. Therefore, this approach not only trains mediacritical competences but furthermore enables a multi-perspective and comparative access to history. The project EHISTO will last two years and is funded by the EU Lifelong Learning Programme with about 300,000 euros. Partners from six European nations take part in the project.

Along with noting Dutch and British media responses to the European Parliament's House of European History (HEH) both before and after it opened in 2017 that reflect Eurosceptic and outright hostile attitudes about the European Union, this article focuses on the presence and absence of colonial and global histories and peoples in the HEH's permanent collection. It contrasts the critical interrogation of modern European imperialism up until the First World War with the lack of attention paid to late imperialism, decolonisation, and postcolonial legacies together with the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. As a result, the HEH has thus far missed the chance to probe how European overseas empires and their collapse intersected with the EU's origins and neglected the EU's ongoing reach outside the continent on account of overseas territories still held by its member states. It also has not effectively engaged with the presence and impact of peoples of migrant backgrounds from outside the EU's current borders, who have not been given the European history they deserve. This results in an incomplete global history of today's multicultural Europe.This article is part of the forum 'The House of European History'. Dit artikel gaat in op de reacties van de Nederlandse en Britse media op het Huis van de Europese geschiedenis (HEH), opgericht door het EU-parlement, zowel voor als na de opening ervan in 2017. Die reacties geven de Euroscepsis en ronduit vijandige houding ten opzichte van dit initiatief weer. Dit artikel richt zich vervolgens op de aan- en afwezigheid van koloniale en globale geschiedenis en van de geschiedenis van niet-westerse volkeren in het HEH. Het artikel contrasteert de kritische reflectie op het moderne Europese imperialisme tot aan de Eerste Wereldoorlog met het gebrek aan aandacht in de permanente collectie voor het naoorlogse imperialisme, de dekolonisatie, de postkoloniale erfenissen, het Ottomaanse Rijk en Turkije. Dit is een gemiste kans. Het HEH kan daardoor ook geen aandacht besteden aan de manier waarop de Europese overzeese kolonies, diens ondergang en het ontstaan van de EU elkaar kruisten. Daarmee gaat het HEH ook voorbij aan het voortdurende contact van de EU met staten die buiten het Europees continent liggen en nog steeds tot het gebied van EU-lidstaten behoren. Een ander punt van kritiek is de weinig doeltreffende aandacht voor inwoners met een migratie-achtergrond van buiten de grenzen van de EU. Zij krijgen op deze manier niet de Europese geschiedenis die hen toekomt. Het resultaat van dit alles is een onvolledige globale geschiedenis van het huidige multiculturele Europa. Bernardine Evaristo's The Emperor's Babe (2001) contributes to the imaginative disentanglement of the traditional British ethnicity-and-nation nexus and questions the related founding myth of racial purity by featuring the character of Zuleika, a young black woman who is born of Sudanese parents in Roman London. Through the depiction of Zuleika, Evaristo offers a subversive reshaping of some versions of the official British national history in the context of a wider revision of the European classical past. However, in spite of its temporal setting, Evaristo's historical novel simultaneously engages with contemporary issues of gendered racialisation and national belonging. In its highly orchestrated poetic prose, Roman Londinium and today's London are imaginatively interwoven. This enables the reader to correlate Zuleika's attempts at negotiating her right to citizenship in the Roman empire to contemporary Black British feminist politics, committed as it is to resisting structures of sexist and racial discrimination at play in present-day Britain.

This book consists of a range of essays covering the complex crises, tensions and dilemmas but also the positive potential in the meeting of Jews with Western culture. In numerous contexts and through the work of fascinating individuals and thinkers, the work examines some of the consequences of political, cultural and personal rupture, as well as the manifold ways in which various Jewish intellectuals, politicians (and occasionally spies!) sought to respond to these ruptures and carve out new, sometimes profound, sometimes fanciful, options of thought and action. It also delves critically into the attacks on liberal and Enlightenment humanism. In almost all the essays the fragility of things is palpably present and the book touches on some of the ironies, problematics and functions of responses to that condition. The work mirrors the author's ongoing fascination with the always fraught, fragile and creatively fecund confrontation of Jews (and others) with European modernity, its history, politics, culture and self-definition. In a time of increasing anxiety and feelings of fragility, this work may be helpful in understanding how people at an earlier (and sometimes contemporary) period sought to come to terms with a similar predicament.

Firstly, the author deals with the historical framework of the recent changes in Europe and with "the European" identity of the different European nations. In a following chapter he outlines the impacts of these changes on education, whereas in the last chapter he discusses "new tasks for comparative education". (DIPF/ ssch)

This was the result of the multilayered disavowal of academic demography – because of its role in Nazi Germany, because of the long-lasting primate of history of politics in post-WW ll Germany, and finally because of the late emergence of the history of society. This situation has profoundly changed during the last decades of the twentieth century. Reasons were the increasing historical distance to the 'fall of man' of demography in Nazi Germany, the reorientation of historiography in the context of critical social and cultural sciences; the inclusion of labor-market research into migration research, and the shaping of in-terdisciplinary and integral research concepts.
