; This study is a first attempt to examine the part of women in the social networking at the court. My starting point is the thesis, that only a new phrasing of the concept of the distinction between "public" and "privacy" will adduce an useful model for interpretation of the role of women in the courtly society. This is the background of my examination of a group of women of the courtly society, the female officeholders at the court of Vienna in the first half of the 17th century. In the description of this group, I began with the study of motivations for the service in the Empress's entourage. Also I examined the regional and familial background of these women, the official duties and the everyday life at court. Finally I can show backed by many examples scopes of action for these women and their possibilities to make careers. As a result of my study I can make four major points: Firstly, I can observe at European courts at least two different types of entourages of princesses (Frauenhofstaate). Therein, the Viennese court was representative for the courts of the Holy Roman Empire and some others such as Denmark and Sweden. Secondly, I can demonstrate that the entourage of the Empress was included in the developing process of a Habsburgian courtly aristocracy (habsburgischer Hofadel) with regard to the families and to the regional origins of the female officeholders. Thirdly, the study describes for the first time the responsibilities of female officeholders and their place in the courtly norms system. Fourthly, I am able to describe the female officeholders in different forms of activity in family networks which were constitutive for the courtly society and for the protection of family careers, too. To complete my study, I have included an appendix of sources with the aim to stimulate further comparative researches. Besides this, the book includes short biographies for the 193 female officeholders whom I could identify for the first half of the 17th century. With these biographies I want to document the base of sources for the study and to make available this material for other researches about the Viennese court. The illustrations - many among them are now published for the first time - show some of the protagonists, but principally they show as a source sui generis the place of women in the frame of manifestations of the courtly society like celebrations, coronations or processions. In this way, this work has the nature of a pilot study for all European courts in early modern times.
Hildegard Frübis: Site(s): Gender-Image-Politics: An Introduction Issue No. 44 takes the form of a workshop report to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of FKW. The editors each contribute brief snapshots to provide an illuminating insight into the journal's future. The FKW editorial team has changed almost entirely since 2004, and accordingly many ambitious ideas exist for current issues. This circumstance was a further reason for conceiving the present jubilee issue as a series of spotlights, in which the current editors each present their perspectives on a wide range of subjects, including art, the image, gender, the cultural and political status of the visual, and so on. The brief contributions should be regarded as a kind of laboratory situation, in which the members of the editorial board discuss their research interests and establish how these relate to feminist issues and also to the current debates on cultural policy.
; This book examines the financial circumstances of Jewish men and women in Vienna from the turn of the century to 1938, focusing on gender as a social category. The central issue is the extent to which the amount and, above all, the category of assets were structured according to gender. Furthermore, the gender specifics of financial withdrawals by the National Socialists and restitution and compensation payments after 1945 shall be examined. Three subject areas will be carefully covered for the period before 1938, in which structured relevance is accorded to the category of gender. These are economic activity, which includes gainful employment and entrepreneurial activity, inheritance practices, and marriage as an influential financial factor. The study is based on a sample of 788 individuals (337 women, 451 men), who were affected by National Socialist proprietary measures, i.e. looting policy, in 1938. The sample was drawn for a study by the Austrian Historical Commission. It includes the assets of these 788 people on April 27, 1938 as they were recorded in the so-called assets declaration with which all people defined as Jewish had to declare their property to the authorities. The sample, which has been entered into a database, includes further data on restitution and compensation. This paper will evaluate the data in terms of gender for the first time. Moreover, the financial situation of 78 of the 788 individuals (Sample II) and their familial environment, in particular their parents and siblings, are researched through further sources including inheritance files, wills, marriage contracts, and commercial and land registers. One of the objectives is to investigate the origin of the assets declared in 1938. Based on the selection of individuals, which was dependent upon the existence of a minimum asset level, there are no significant differences between the asset volume of men and women from the sample. Nevertheless, the study points out that the composition of the assets, which means the occurrence and scope of different categories of assets, was determined by gender specific factors. Inheritance practices and segregated access to asset acquisition, particularly in economic activity, are identified as reasons for this. Gender specifics in real estate and business as well as asset transfers between generations and married couples are elaborated upon in detail. Dowries not only influenced the financial situation of the wife or widow and her husband, but also presented essential financial resources for companies. The possibility of economic activity and thereby acquisition of assets is of particular importance; this possibility is primarily decided in the family, as is shown in the individual case histories. Although gender specific differences can hardly be verified in National Socialist asset withdrawal, they can be documented in the National Socialists' approach to mixed couples. The restitution results are influenced by several factors; among these are also the claimed asset categories. In a comparative evaluation of men and women, the restitution results reflect the success of the respective asset categories.
"Taking its starting points from the difficulties of a politics of production inherent in the very structure of capitalist accumulation as a 'private affair' this texts looks at the lessons to be drawn from the social-democratic experience of a politics for the 'humanization of the working life' as it has been implemented in the 1970s and 1980s in Ger-many. Based on looking back beyond the 'epochal rupture' which has taken place since then, it elaborates the kind of experience the German trade unions have been making in the framework of this reform programme. On this basis, it criticizes prevailing attitudes of simply concluding the unfeasibility of political projects from their 'reformist' mould and argues that the present situation of transition still remains open for a politics of reform, although possibly of a more transitory nature, leaving open future deeper transformations - under the double condition of respecting the contingencies of historical agency, especially with regard to empowering strategies, and of developing a new kind of politics based on a broad alliance concerning the 'quality of work' in a comprehensive understanding, not just wage work, with a focus on empowerment, while at the same time addressing the challenges of ecological and feminist issues." Discusses the use of women's networks (WNs) in the political education efforts of European new social movements, highlighting both the advantages & dangers of gender-segregated political learning. Leftist & other movements have often sought to mobilize women while ignoring issues of oppression & violence against women in their utopian schemes. WNs exemplify the paradox of feminist politics: they offer the chance to develop & teach women's issues & strengthen the position of women in movements, but they risk segregation & legitimation of gender status as a criterion for exclusion. WNs at the national level, their contributions to feminist theory & practice, & their future are considered. 7 References. E. Blackwell
; The author analyses practices and debates in feminist activism in Vienna with regards to issues of migration and ethnicisation, racism and anti-racism. Judith Butler has produced a body of highly influential feminist work, focused on the concept of gender as a social construct and a "performance". I analyze those concepts, arguing that, although earlier feminists had already defended many of Butler's key ideas, the idea of performance is an interesting and original contribution. However, key elements of her conception are insufficiently explored, and complex issues are obscured by the hermetic and unnecessarily obscure character of her style. Moreover, the work appears insufficiently related to practical political concerns and, in general to the material side of life. Insofar as it does address practical concerns, the work urges a quietism that appears at odds with feminist attempts to achieve material and institutional change. (Leviathan / FUB)
Feminist approaches increasingly claim that their contribution to the field of international relations is of major importance. It is argued here that, if feminist approaches want to be more than just a phenomenon of "political correctness," their constructive potential as well as their empirical fruitfulness need to be made explicit. Specifically, feminism promises to enhance our understanding of problems of political identity, which are currently becoming more & more urgent topics within IR. In addition, we have to examine more systematically the ontological intersections & tensions that differentiate or unite feminist theories & theories of IR, in order to provide a solid foundation for a dialogue between feminism & IR. On a critical note, the article asks why dealing with the question of gender appears to be different from & more problematic than dealing with other research topics. In order to render issues of "gender & IR" communicable, it is necessary to remove them from the area of personal sensibilities. Adapted from the source document.
; Feminist (social) work with girls as an example of (de-)thematizing and neoliberal masking – an interjection In this article we reflect on gender issues caught between gender equality, difference and usurpation, using the example of feminist (social) work with girls and taking into account the mechanisms and masking effects of neoliberal activations. Our ideas are characterized by a partisan foundation in reality and a feminist understanding of science. The line of argument is based on a dialogi- cal and political positioning, which is aimed at stimulating and facilitating a thematization and debate. We would like the article to be seen as an interjection which invites further discussion.
