The conflict opposing Georgia & Russia has a direct impact in the Ukraine. But the President, the Prime Minister & the opposition leader have all chosen different sides & do not agree on what should be Ukraine's position. The President sided with Georgia while the leader of the opposition supported Russia's intervention. Those divergences show an acute internal political competition & the fundamental instability of the Ukraine's relationship with Russia. Adapted from the source document.
Relations with Russia are a strategic priority for the European Union in terms of geopolitics, economics & energy supplies. To understand their evolution, it is important to see them first through the Post Cold War paradigm & then through the new paradigm built upon the ideological confrontation of the EU's & Russia's views of Europe. The Post Cold War paradigm came to an end with the conflict in Georgia when Russia showed its willingness to change the European regional order & thus made clear how much the views of the EU & Russia have come apart. This paper analyses the United States-Russia relationship in a changing context of growing challenges that have marked the mandates of Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev. The text starts by tracing the context where Obama and Medvedev come to power, and the dwindling of tensions that were very much present in this relationship, particularly in 2007 and 2008, leading to the Georgia war and the reset policy. The reset policy allowed the revision of procedures and the consolidation of trust, though the paper argues that effective coordination of policies and practices between Russia and the United States is still far from an objective reality. Adapted from the source document.
Since independence, as Georgia attempted to become closer to Western Europe & the Atlantic community, its relations with Russia have deteriorated. The Five Days War in August 2008 comes as a result of the mounting tensions between Russia & Georgia, after the Rose Revolution. Successive Russian provocations show clearly that Moscow was preparing for a showdown. However, Moscow may have made a mistake when it decided to recognize the unilateral declarations of independence of South Ossetia & Abkhazia. Adapted from the source document.
The events in the hot summer in the South Caucasus are the outcome of a complex dynamics in which a broad set of policies & options converged to give way to the spiral of violence that ensued on the night of the 7th to the 8th of August, 2008, when Russian troops invaded Georgia through South Ossetia. The Russian intervention in Georgia should be analyzed in the context of the recent political evolution in the republic, clarifying the framework for relations with its neighbors, as well as other international actors, & highlighting the implications of these developments in the area, with a particular focus on Russian foreign policy objectives. Adapted from the source document.
After the South Caucasus crisis & the clash between Georgia & Russia it makes perfect sense to ask whether we are or not on the verge of a second cold war. Russia is challenging the international balance, as it perceives NATO's enlargement as a form of encirclement. But it is s not possible to embark on a Second Cold War at this juncture. Adapted from the source document.
The Georgian-Russian conflict in August 2008 underscored the need for the EU to devise a different model of relationship with Moscow. The implications of the conflict have specific European dimensions, in which EU-Russia relations are a cornerstone. The solution to the Georgian crisis is located at two complementary levels: the implementation of the Medvedev-Sarkozy peace plan & the rethinking of the cooperation with the Kremlin. In that sense, there is a need to operationalize a model of "selective cooperation" towards Russia in order to create a more constructive relationship. Adapted from the source document.
In this paper, I will examine a number of most notorious examples of Russia's conflictual relations with adjacent post-Soviet states like Estonia, Georgia, & Ukraine. I will then extend my analysis to Russia's controversial relations with Great Britain & NATO, & conclude by referring to the case of the Kaliningrad oblast. In my judgment, all these cases demonstrate how uneasy is the overcoming of the Soviet heritage in Russia's foreign policy & what kind of collisions the inevitable reactualization of this heritage might entail. Objective: to understand the perceptions of nurses specializing in nephrology regarding the skills needed to care for people with acute kidney injury. Method: qualitative study carried out with six nephrology nurses, using the focus group as a technique and the guiding question "Talk about your perceptions regarding the skills needed by nurses who care for people with acute renal failure". Audios were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and submitted to content analysis. Results: three categories emerged: pathophysiological knowledge of Acute Kidney Injury as a prevention and care strategy in pre-dialysis; operationalization and management of machines during dialysis therapy and difficulties in operationalizing care with transference of the responsibility to provide care for nursing technicians. Conclusion: knowledge about pathophysiology of acute kidney injury, skill in handling machines, intervention in complications, accurate analysis of exams, care with nutritional aspects and handling of catheters are the main skills required for operational care. However, the fragility of the legislation to this public makes it difficult to operate care safely.
