When he went to South Africa in 1875, no one could imagine that the son of converted Hamburg Jews would soon become one of the richest men of his time - thanks to the diamonds of Kimberley and the gold of the Witwatersrand.As a co-founder of De Beers Ltd. and close friend of Cecil Rhodes, the charismatic promoter of British imperialism in southern Africa, Alfred Beit became one of the colonial fathers of Rhodesia. Debates over who belongs in Europe and who doesn't increasingly speak the language of mixing, but how are the figures commonly described as 'mixed' actually embodied? The Biopolitics of Mixing invites us to reckon with the spectres of pathologization past and present, placing the celebration of mixing beside moral panics over terrorism and trafficking and a post-race multiculturalism that elevates some as privileged members of the neoliberal community, whilst ghosting others from it. Drawing on a broad archive including rich qualitative interviews conducted in Britain and Germany, media and policy debates, popular culture, race-based research and queer-of-colour theories, this book imagines into being communities in which people and places normally kept separate can coexist in the same reality. As such, it will appeal to scholars across a range of sociological and cultural studies, including critical race, ethnic and migration studies, transnational gender and queer studies, German and European studies, Thai and Southeast Asian studies, and studies of affect, performativity, biopolitics and necropolitics. It should be read by all those interested in thinking critically on the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality and disability.

While it was evident to the classics of social theory that modern societies are highly dynamic forms of social organization, and that this dynamic nature must be reflected explicitly and confronted directly in modes of analysis across the social sciences, over the course of the twentieth century, the acknowledgement of this fact has been weakening. As the social sciences became increasingly concerned with issues of professionalization and standards of validity inspired by more established disciplines, especially the natural sciences and economics, the focus on dynamic processes gave way to efforts to illuminate structural (i.e., static) features of modern social life. In recent decades, however, this preoccupation with structure has begun to give way to more process-oriented research orientations. In part, this renewed interest in dynamics rather than statics is reflective of the growing influence of Continental European traditions, especially in Germany and France. In this follow-up volume to "Theorizing the Dynamics of Social Processes (vol. 27)", the emphasis is placed on recent trends in Continental European social theory, and on the importance of political analyses to theorizing modern societies.

In this article, we describe the results of a multiple case study on the indirect corporate innovation impact of climate change in the Central German chemical industry. We investigate the demands imposed on enterprises in this context as well as the sources, outcomes and determining factors in the innovative process at the corporate level. We argue that climate change drives corporate innovations through various channels. A main finding is that rising energy prices were a key driver for incremental energy efficiency innovations in the enterprises' production processes. For product innovation, customer requests were a main driver, though often these requests are not directly related to climate issues. The introduction or extension of environmental and energy management systems as well as the certification of these are the most common forms of organizational innovations. For marketing purposes, the topic of climate change was hardly utilized so far. As the most important determinants for corporate climate innovations, corporate structure and flexibility of the product portfolio, political asymmetry regarding environmental regulation and governmental funding were identified. -- Climate change ; innovation ; chemical industry ; Central Germany

Mining is currently not a statistically significant category of development-induced displacement.
Nevertheless, the social costs of exploitation are great, and that is why the topic is worthy of a wider
and more profound scientific analysis. The first displacement caused by mining dates back to the
late nineteenth century. As pointed out by Walter Fernandes, in the Indian region of Jarkhand alone,
mining has led to the displacement of 2.55 million people. Contrary to the opinions of some
specialists, the problem of mining-induced displacement and resettlement is a global problem,
occurring on all continents. Countries with particularly large-scale MIDR include: India, China,
many African countries (e.g. Ghana, Botswana), and even Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. The
problem of forced displacement is also a consequence of open-pit coal mining in European
countries like Germany and Poland. Although mining-induced displacement is a global
phenomenon, problems experienced by the displacees in many parts of the world differ greatly. The
largest portion of the displacement is caused by open-pit mining (associated with the extraction of
lignite, copper, and diamonds).

Debates about the production and use of biofuels are emotionally charged and often one-sided, with one group presenting them as a cure-all, the other condemning them out of hand. Assessments of the social and ecological repercussions of biofuel production diverge enormously, and putatively social and ecological criticism sometimes serves as a cover for economic interests. Depending on the competitiveness of their domestic biofuel production, states strive to open up new markets or erect trade barriers to protect their own industries. Finally, the debate is often conducted in idealistic terms, where the pros and cons of biofuels are measured not by the yardstick of empirical comparison with other resources and fuels, but against utopian standards that only few products can hope to satisfy. This study focuses on trade and value conflicts over biofuels, and shall contribute to de-emotionalising the discussion. We outline the positions of the biggest biofuel-producing states, Germany/EU, the United States and Brazil, and analyse their main lines of argument as well as bilateral and multilateral cooperation formats that seek to bridge differences and thus reduce conflict potential

It traces his birth and education in Germany; his decision, after the rise of Hitler, to immigrate to Palestine rather than to accept a position at Oxford; and his intimate 18-year association with Chaim Weizmann - not only as his closest scientific associate but also as Scientific Director of both the Sieff Institute and of the Weizmann Institute. Also described is his tragic falling out with Weizmann over the issue of the role of science in defense research, leading to his subsequent 18-year association with David Ben-Gurion as his personal science advisor and as Head of Scientific Research for the Israeli Defense Ministry, and to his pivotal role in the development of the Israeli atomic bomb.
