Im Jahr 2008 jährte sich zum 150. Mal der Geburtstag Ludwig Quiddes, der von 1890 bis 1892 das Preußische Historische Institut in Rom leitete und dort das Repertorium Germanicum (RG) initiierte, das noch heute zu den wichtigsten Unternehmen der historischen Grundlagenforschung zählt. Seine Satire "Caligula" war einer der erfolgreichsten Essays der Zeit, doch führten die Anspielungen auf Kaiser Wilhelm II. zum Ende seiner wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn. Auf der Basis eines beträchtlichen Privatvermögens betätigte er sich als Politiker und Publizist, insbesondere in der Friedensbewegung. Der aus einer Tagung hervorgegangene Sammelband würdigt Quidde als Historiker, als Persönlichkeit der Friedensbewegung und als Friedensnobelpreisträger. Ferner geht es um ihn als "Vater" des RG sowie des Tochterunternehmens Repertorium Poenitentiariae Germanicum (RPG). Dabei werden nicht nur die aktuellen Möglichkeiten der Erschließung der kurialen Registerserien und ihre Tragfähigkeit für Themen der europäischen Geschichte diskutiert, sondern auch die europäische Anschlussfähigkeit der unter Ludwig Quidde begonnenen Projekte ausgelotet sowie Perspektiven der modernen elektronischen Erschließung und Bearbeitung der kurialen Überlieferung aufgezeigt.

The 1970s was a crucial period of transition in polar science, when Antarctica, as the "continent defined by and for science" (Elzinga 1993), was intrinsically linked with economic interests and global environmental concerns. This shift towards a resource-oriented research agenda will be examined in the case of the Federal Republic of Germany and its GANOVEX (German Antarctic North Victoria Land Expedition) Expeditions. They started in 1979 and aimed to erase the last blank spots on the geological map of Antarctica and thus prove that Germany can attain consultative status in the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS). In this context, scientists played a key role in negotiating the possibilities and limits of resource exploration in the late 1970s. I will discuss the so-called "Gondwana hypothesis" and its role in resource-driven research and argue that global geopolitical interests in new resource potentials motivated the geological mapping of Antarctica.

In an era of ever faster and more momentous technological development, both technology assessment and transdisciplinary interventions are in danger of structurally lagging behind the speed of innovation. This paper proposes a new tiered approach to technology assessment at low Technology Readiness Levels that enables a both rapid and concerted interdisciplinary science response to this Great Acceleration. Covering sustainability, ethics, and consumer issues, this approach encourages and enables the innovators themselves to conduct assessments embedded in the innovation process as early as possible. Suitable tools for early engagement that help facilitate development-integrated assessments are introduced and described. The design and use of these instruments in the field of basic research is illustrated using the Cluster of Excellence livMatS as an example.
