; The German Ambassador reviewed the unification of Germany. He outlined its historical oportunity, and criticized some groups that had been too ductile towards East Germany, Meridional and Eastern Europe Communists Regimes. Those groups -though being a minority exerted an important political influence. He also remarked that national unification, which had been an essential objective of German foreign policy for 40 years, was achieved in a few months during 1990. The Embassador also pointed out the social, political and economic obligations wich were assumed by West Germany when the unification took place. West Germany will have in 1995 an internal debt 15% higher than in 1990. The productivity of East Germany compared to West Germany is only 30%. In addition to great unemployement there is the problem of the complete restructuring of the East German economic structure. On the other hand, Germany is moving towars a future World Order based on an "International Democratic Pax", peace would be garanteed by democracies -real democracies- due to their internal structures are practically uncapable of acts of aggression. Regarding the German international security, he underlined the importance of OTAN, OCDE and EC for his country and pointed out the interests of Germany in each organism. Finally, he stated that unified Germany in the United Nations (a future member of the Security Council); part of a regionalized Europe, with an impor-tant Democratic and Economical tradition and whith a moderate, balanced and cooperative foreing policy, moves away, the ghost of a "Germany too strong". ; Instituto de Relaciones Internacionales (IRI)

The notion of "self" and "other" and its representation in artwork and literature is an important theme in current cultural sciences as well as in our everyday life in contemporary Western societies. Moreover, the concept of "self" and "other" and its imaginary dichotomy is gaining more and more political impact in a world of resurfacing ideology-ridden conflicts. The essays deal with Jewish reality in contemporary Germany and its reflection in movies from the special point of view of cultural sciences, political sciences, and religious studies. This anthology presents challengingly new insights into topics rarely covered, such as youth culture or humor, and finally discusses the images of Jewish life as realities still to be constructed.

The historical state-legal development of Germany in many ways is specific, because although the German state was created after the Franco-Prussian war of 1871, certain announcements and elements of its statehood existed even before its official creation. With the Paris Peace Aagreement of May 30, 1814, German states were declared autonomous and joined forces in a federal alliance. The decisions of the Vienna Congress of 1815 were regarded as the fundamental law of the German Union, and its regulation was envisaged by the German federal acts, which in a small part were altered by the Viennese federal acts of 1820. In the second half of the 19th century the conditions for the national formation of Germany matured, and this was largely the merit of the Prussian chancellor Otto von Bismarck. His goal was to unite Germany around Prussia and for that purpose he used manipulation, diplomacy and power. At the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, the strengthened German state and the increased industrial capital it possessed conditioned the demand for "its place under the sun" in the imperialist world politics, which surpassed its state borders. At a time when the colonial policies of the great and powerful states largely captured the springs and centers of imperial holdings in Africa and Asia, the belated birth of this gigantic state has problematized the balance of powers in Europe. The imperialist German project failed in 1918. For these reasons, this paper deals with the legal and political aspects of national Germany, from its creation to the Second World War.

On the centenary of the establishment of modern Germany's first democratic republic, this special issue explores how the wealth of scholarship on Weimar culture from the last two and a half decades, since re-unification, has contributed specifically to the discipline of art history and vice versa. It also interrogates where art historical research on the Weimar Republic might be heading? What role, if any, do the Republic's intellectuals, artists and cultural producers continue to play in the present? The issue explores the cultural practices, production and reception of art from across Germany's towns, cities and rural provinces. It includes in-depth analyses of art made by historiographically under-represented Berlin-based women Lotte Laserstein and Jeanne Mammen, as well as by regionally-based artists including lesser-known work by Elsa Haensgen-Dingkuhn, Gela Forster and Heinrich Hoerle. It also includes essays on the overlooked material and iconographic contexts for the Merz collages of the more celebrated Kurt Schwitters, as well as in-depth research on the production and appearance of Notgeld - the vast sums of emergency money that were produced during Germany's period of hyper-inflation, between 1914 and 1923.

Based on a post-Keynesian model of the relationship between wages, prices and employment, this paper begins by studying the extent to which unit labour cost trends have been responsible for disinflation and deflationary tendencies in Germany and Europe. Thereafter, the reasons for the deflationary development of unit labour costs in recent years, in particular in Germany, are analysed. Finally, the impact of deflationary wage policies on German and European stagnation are discussed and it is concluded that the excessive wage restraint in Germany not only exacerbates stagnation and deflationary tendencies in Germany but might also have a deflationary impact on the other EMU countries.

From the monarchical terror of the Middle Ages to the mangled Europe of the Twenty-first Century, A People's History of Modern Europe tracks the history of the continent through the deeds of those whom mainstream history tries to forget. Europe provided the perfect conditions for a great number of political revolutions from below. The German peasant wars of Thomas Müntzer, the bourgeoisie revolutions of the eighteenth century through to the rise of the industrial worker in England and the turbulent journey of the Russian Soviets, the role of the European working class throughout the Cold War, students in 1968 and through to the present day, where we continue to fight to forge an alternative to the barbaric economic system. With sections focusing on the role of women, this history sweeps away the tired platitudes of the privileged which our current understanding is based upon, and provides an opportunity to see our history differently. ; An accessible history for anyone interested in discovering the alternative story of Modern Europe. ; Includes bibliographical references and indexes. ; From the monarchical terror of the Middle Ages to the mangled Europe of the Twenty-first Century, A People's History of Modern Europe tracks the history of the continent through the deeds of those whom mainstream history tries to forget.
