Hamburgs Gedächtnis - die Threse des Hamburger Rates. Die Regesten der Urkunden im Staatsarchiv der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg Bd. I: 1350-1399
The people of the late medieval city of Hamburg laid the foundations for power, prosperity and influence on the banks of the river Elbe. The more important the city became, the greater the need was to store important documents safely. While this task was initially only taken over by a small crate, the so-called "Threse" soon grew into a cabinet with drawers and finally into a room of the town hall.Although the holdings in the Hamburg State Archives have been handed down to a large extent in their entirety, there was no comprehensive scientific analysis. Therefore, a project of the University of Hamburg from February 2010 to March 2012 took on a contemporary edition of the collection. This volume titled "Hamburg's Memory - the Threse of the Hamburg Council, covers the years 1350 to 1399. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Jürgen Sarnowsky, scientific authors Jeanine Marquard and Nico Nolden draw up Regesta who represent all aspects of the content, not only legally relevant ones. The annotation apparatus links the pieces with each other, explains people, places and terms and gives text-critical hints. In the registers, keywords classify the pieces 1) according to persons, 2) offices and institutions and 3) places and terms. In addition, a picture attachment shows chancellery signs, notarial instruments and other symbols."
Die Begründer der Hamburgischen Wissenschaftlichen Stiftung
In: Mäzene für Wissenschaft
According to a senior citizen of a trading company in Hamburg, if he is too stupid for sugar, let him study,"" Obviously, such an environment did not particularly appreciate science. Nevertheless, Senator Werner von Melle succeeded in collecting a sum of almost four million marks from many foresighted Hamburg citizens, so that the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung (Hamburg Scientific Foundation) was able to come into being on 12 April 1907. This first volume of the series ""Patrons for Science"" honours in short biographies all personalities who have been involved in the foundation's founding phase, either financially or through their participation on the board of trustees. Many of them have become well-known far beyond Hamburg, others have been completely forgotten. The book is introduced by the essay "Current Past" which embeds the founders of the foundation in the cultural and scientific-political context of Hamburg around the turn of the century. After its first publication in 2007, this volume is now in its 2nd edition completely revised and available in colour.
Scientific Research Efficiency
In: Russian Foundation for Basic Research Journal. Humanities and social sciences, S. 87-97
ISSN: 2587-8956
The paper reveals the issue of the scientific research efficiency, which is in the center of modern scientific and philosophical debates. This problem is interpreted as a contradiction between efficiency and autonomy – the two significant features of academic research. This contradiction became urgent in the second half of the 20th century and is expressed in the crisis of institutional interactions or a clash of interests between academia and its governing stakeholders. The paper provides a brief description of the historical prerequisites of this contradiction, obtains insights into the modern crisis and outlines possible ways out. As a conclusion, it emphasizes that the issue of academic efficiency may be solved through a new system of adequate representation of scientific research that would also act as a metric of academic efficiency, thus aligning the targets of various entities engaged in the academic activities. The crucial preconditions for this system in Russia are the formation of a consolidated academia and aligned targets of the academic policy.
Elder care policies in China: the social value foundation is in the family
In: EAI occasional paper no. 11
"If modernisation means mass longevity, it raises hopes that everyone may enjoy a full span of years. It also brings the fear that many will not be able to take care of themselves and will rely upon society to provide special care. Modernisation in this sense also means the rise of the welfare state: let the government take care of the frail and the old.Mass aging has proven to be a financial crisis for welfare states in the advanced economies of the West; it also raises questions about the future of family-based care in the East while professionals and academicians in the advanced economies of the West continue to debate about whose responsibility it is to take care of the elders (the state or the individual?), governments in East Asia hold firmly to the position that it is the family that has the primary responsibility to take care of old members, and that the government's role is to assist families in discharging elder care responsibilities. This publication examines some of the often-raised questions identified in the research literature in the past 25 years — for example, the nature and scope of caregiving, the issue of care burden, and the claim that family-based care is really women care that is sex-biased. The author marshals evidence to show from studies conducted in China that care burden is a complex form of social relations that is shaped by the culture. Furthermore, the gender and type of relations may largely determine in what type of kin relations are the subjective feelings of burden the greatest and where objective indications of burden may remain constant. In conclusion, the author suggests that the best common resolution for both the East and the West is to establish a workable partnership between the state and the family in facing the forthcoming crisis of elder care in a fully aged society.
