Discusses the legacies of external domination & totalitarianism on nation building in post-Soviet Ukraine. Nation building in Ukraine is placed in a historical context showing how many contemporary Ukrainian characteristics existed during earlier periods in other countries. Challenged is the view that language should be perceived as the key -- if not the only -- marker of national identity in Ukraine. Instead, other elements of national identity are explored to show how nation building is developing in Ukraine. Russian-speaking Ukrainians, therefore, should not be regarded as "disloyal" to Ukrainian independence & as supporters of pro-Russian separatism, a view often held in the academic community. 5 Tables. Stan Grant asks why when it comes to identity he is asked to choose between black and white. Is identity a myth? A constructed story we tell ourselves? Tribalism, nationalism and sectarianism are dividing the world into us and them. Communities are a tinderbox of anger and resentment. He passionately hopes we are not hard wired for hate. Grant argues that it is time to leave identity behind and to embrace cosmopolitanism. On Identity is a meditation on hope and community
Gender identity
In: LGBTQ issues
"Gender identity and expression make up a diverse range of experiences. Today we are moving towards a world where our understanding of gender isn't so rigid. It helps to think of gender as a spectrum of identities rather than a binary system of only boy/girl. There are people who identify in all the different places within the spectrum, and some who feel their identity falls outside of the spectrum all together"--

(Originally published in French in elements, 2004, 113, summer.) Contemplates the meaning & philosophies of identity. The problem of identity -- voiced through the question, "Who am I?" -- is representative of modern societies, & identity within traditional & pre-modern cultures is discussed. The concept identity was transformed during the Enlightenment & the relationship between identity & political ideologies is analyzed. Recognition, including mutual recognition, is deemed essential to one's personal & collective identities, & additional complexities of individual & collective identities are identified. The effects of postmodernism & globalization on identity are pondered. L. Collins Leigh
National identity
In: Global viewpoints
"How can we maintain a strong national identity without going too far? Having pride in one's country, its history and values, is important, but what happens when that is threatened by new immigrant groups? When a country becomes more diverse, whether it's race, ethnicity, or religious faith, does the nation's identity expand to accommodate those changes or does it become more rigid, setting the stage for an "us" and "them" conflict? Through diverse perspectives from countries around the world, this volume explores facets of national identity-its purpose, its benefits and dangers, and its future in a changing world"--
