(BIOst-Mrk)

"The chapter gives an overview of classical and contemporary sociological models of immigrant integration, including a critical discussion of potential discontinuities between contemporary migration and migration at the beginning of the twentieth century.; The chapter starts with a critical reflection on the manifold terms used to describe patterns of immigrant settlement. I argue that, from a sociological perspective, the concept of integration is well suited to serve as an overall concept, describing the interrelation between an individual and society, with assimilation being but one empirical possibility.; The review then comprises two parts. The first part discusses the classic models of immigrant integration, including race-relation cycles (R. E. Park as well as E. S. Bogardus), social psychological accounts of changing group membership (R. Taft), as well as the works of Shmuel N. Eisenstadt and Milton M. Gordon. The second part reviews contemporary models of immigrant integration: the modes of incorporation model by Alejandro Portes and Ruben Rumbaut, the theory of segmented assimilation by Alejandro Portes and Min Zhou, as well as the model of intergenerational integration by Hartmut Esser. Contemporary models improve the earlier ones in that they forego linear and deterministic conceptions of the integration process, pay heed to the contextual characteristics, and allow for deducing testable hypothesis. I argue that the model of intergenerational integration, with a general sociological theory of action at its core, may be the most versatile as it is not constructed with reference to a specific geographical or historical context and may be applied even if conditions change." Sociologist Smitha Radhakrishnan reviews the books The Managed Hand and The New Entrepreneurs. Each illustrates the opportunity and systematic discrimination faced by immigrant entrepreneurs in the United States. These works push us to reconsider the importance of minority business owners in continuing to make the American dream real for all of us.
(rk)

"This paper examines the chances for immigrants on the European job market. The data represents a one percent sample of the German population of the Micro census for the years 1998, 2000 and 2003 and Eurostat Labour Force Survey data. The issue addressed is how the academic and occupational level of education (participation in education), labour participation, professional status, unemployment rate, income, female labour participation and atypical occupation (structure of employment) of the foreigners differ from the native population. We find that foreigners in EU countries are more likely to be unemployed and are often in lower segments of the labour market. European comparisons of the labour market situation shows that the acknowledgment of foreign degrees, discrimination, supporting measures and the labour market policy have to be taken into account, as well as the (country-specific) human capital, language skills and the immigrants' participation in education." Introduction: In the last years migration has become a major political and social concern in West-Europe. Some researchesindicate that immigrants are more prone to certain psychiatric disorders, while other show the "immigrant paradox".Data about immigrants' admission to acute psychiatry settings and substances and alcohol use-related considerations are still controversial. Aims: To evaluate data about immigrants' admission to the acute Italian Psychiatry Ward of Hospital of Novara, focusing on substances and alcohol. Methods: The study was performed from January to December 2017, without any exclusion criteria. The final database contains detailed information including diagnostic treatment-related and sociodemographic characteristics. The sample was divided into two subgroups: immigrants with (SAU) or without a history of substances or alcohol abuse (N-SAA). Each patient was assessed with the Health of the Nation Outcome Scales and the Clinical Global Impression. Results: Of the total of 71 immigrants (mean age 37.95 years), 34 were female.49.3% of them with SAU. Specifically, immigrants with SAU seemed to have a shorter hospital stayand to obtain higher scores on the subscale "behavior" and "social" of HONOS(p<0.05). Differences in the use of antidepressants and atypical antipsychotics were showed. Conclusion: From our study resulted that immigrants are more prone to develop addictive behavior, maybe due to stress related to the migration, without information on the causality of relationship. This issue needs to be expanded in order to possibly align psychiatric services to the needs of immigrant patients.
