The starting point of this thesis was that diplomats abroad must interact effectively with people who have different values, behavioural norms and ways of perceiving reality, otherwise their contact with the culture and the people from the new culture will be a negative and inefficient one. My basic idea was that in the case of diplomacy we can speak about an overlap with diplomats belonging to two cultures. The most international management literature frames intercultural differences as areas of conflict. Cultural misunderstandings are often experienced as conflicts, and the conflicts are seen as threats. In diplomatic relations, threats and conflicts can lead to war. Since cultural misunderstandings and conflicts are considered as problems to be avoided, if diplomats abroad have the necessary skills and knowledge their task will be much easier. I explore the concept of intercultural communication competence in diplomacy. My intention is to prove that the communication process in diplomacy is of a special nature and a lot of its aspects are unique in this field, precisely because they are international and a generally valid solution cannot be found. This field was not of so much interest and this can partially explain the many cases of miscommunication, misunderstanding and misperception in diplomacy. The consequences could be major for the diplomat as person and for the country he represents. One of my goals is to explain what the communication problems in diplomacy and negotiations are when people with different cultural backgrounds encounter each other. The structure of the thesis includes introduction, methodology, six chapters, conclusions, bibliography, transcript of the 26 interviews and annexes. Chapter 1 gives the definition and etymology of the word 'diplomacy' and presents briefly the history of diplomacy (based on Nicolson - 1954, Callieres - 1919, Martens - 1832, 1851). The need for and the advantages of diplomatic dialogue are other topics included in this chapter, with references to the need for ...

The letter of recommendation (LR) as a means to communicate across different cultures for the purpose of applying for entering a university can be problematic. Using contrastive rhetoric analytic framework, this paper compares LRs written by Chinese and English native speaker professionals. Discussion of culturally situated interpretations of the LRs is based on interviews with university professors who have been on the admission committee. The findings show similarities in macro discourse structure but differences in discourse content between the LRs, which suggest that successful intercultural communication in LRs requires meticulous dialogue with the 'other' according to Bakhtin's theory of dialogism. Unequal power relationship between writer and reader is also discussed from critical discourse analysis perspective.

This study's main objective was to identify reactions triggered when individuals partaking in an intercultural communication interaction believe that there is a discrepancy between the way they identify themselves ethnically and the way they are perceived. In addition, I examined how their reactions can influence the interactions in question. The study showed that reactions caused by perceived misconceptions of one's ethnic identity are context-dependent. While evaluations of the counterpart's attitude are of importance (whether it's positive, neutral, or negative) the reactions are also influenced by circumstances such as one's former experiences with the problem, language skills, and the nature of the relationship with the other party involved. The course of the interaction is, among other things, affected by the counterparts' personality and their response to being reprimanded.

Translating Theory into Practice Globalizing Intercultural Communication: A Reader introduces students to intercultural communication within the global context, and equips them with the knowledge and understanding to grapple with the dynamic, interconnected and complex nature of intercultural relations in the world today. This reader is organized around foundational and contemporary themes of intercultural communication. Each of the 14 chapters pairs an original research article explicating key topics, theories, or concepts with a first-person narrative that brings the chapter content alive and invites students to develop and apply their knowledge of intercultural communication. Each chapter's pair of readings is framed by an introduction highlighting important issues presented in the readings that are relevant to the study and practice of intercultural communication and end-of-chapter pedagogical features including key terms and discussion questions. In addition to illuminating concepts, theories, and issues, authors/editors Kathryn Sorrells and Sachi Sekimoto focus particular attention on grounding theory in everyday experience and translating theory into practice and actions that can be taken to promote social responsibility and social justice.
