On March 1, 1987, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, the top nuclear scientist of Pakistan, revealed in an interview that his country had developed an atomic weapon. This article discusses the farreaching consequences for the subcontinent. In the author's view, Pakistan has engaged through the years in what a renowned Indian defence analyst calls "strategic deception". Significant responsability for this development is apportioned to the United States, a "self-avowed champion of nuclear non-proliferation". (DÜI-Hns)
