The Power of Persuasion: Becoming a Merchant in the 18th Century
Lucas Haasis found a time capsule: A complete mercantile letter archive of the merchant Nicolaus Gottlieb Luetkens who lived in 18th century Hamburg. Luetkens travelled France between 1743-1745 in order to become a successful wholesale merchant. He succeeded in this undertaking via both shrewd business practice and proficient skills in the practice of letter writing. Based on this unique discovery, in this microhistorical study Lucas Haasis examines the crucial steps and activities of a mercantile establishment phase, the typical letter practices of Early Modern merchants, and the practical principles of persuasion leading to success in the 18th century.

Timeline of Chinese-European Cultural Relations
Contacts between China and Europe are more than two- thousand years old. In the first millennium they were spo- radic and only indirect, as knowledge of each other was mediated by various peoples of the Near and Middle East and Inner Asia. It was only in the second millennium that the contacts slowly increased and resulted in mutual cultural influence. There have been periods in which Chinese cultural influence in Europe was stronger than European influence in China, and other periods in which China was under the impact of European culture. Generally speak- ing, until about 1500 it was mainly China that influenced Europe (quite a number of Chinese inventions made their way to the West), whereas since then European influence in China has grown steadily. In most cases contacts on both sides were motivated by economic interests but these were invariably followed by cultural interests, at least on the European side. The Silk Road, e.g., came into exis- tence because of the need to transport commercial goods between Europe and China, but at the same time cultural assets were transported on this route and they, in fact, were of lasting impact.

The Jabnean Academy: Rabbi Dr. Jacob Isaac Niemirower's Proposal to Found a Modern Academy of the Jewish People
In: Analele Universității București: Annals of the University of Bucharest = Les Annales de l'Université de Bucarest. Științe politice = Political science series = Série Sciences politiques, Band 16, Heft 1, S. 39-52
The aim of this article is to present and to analyze Rabbi Dr. Jacob Isaac Niemirower's idea of the necessity of founding a modern Academy of the Jewish people in Jerusalem and his proposal and project for its foundation. When and why did Rabbi Dr. Jacob Isaac Niemirower get this idea? What should be the function and purpose of the academy? What should its fields of research be, and who should belong to it? Rabbi Dr. Jacob Isaac Niemirower, a "cultural Zionist", proposed the idea of the foundation of a modern Academy of the Jewish people, which he called "the Jabnean Academy" or an Academy of "Pan-Judaism" in an article published in a journal in 1899. He enlarged his proposal in several other articles in various journals and booklets, published in German, Hebrew and Romanian, between 1902-1919. Rabbi Dr. Jacob Isaac Niemirower's proposal was aimed at leaders of the Zionist Movement, Jewish intellectuals and wealthy Jews who could support the project. His proposal did not win much support as it was probably ahead of its times. However, Rabbi Dr. Jacob Isaac Niemirower's proposal was kept alive by some Jewish leaders from Romania, one of them being Moritz Schweig, who in 1932 was proud that the idea of founding a modern Jewish Academy in Palestine was that of a Romanian Jew.

Neue Politische Ökonomie in der Geschichte: Vom Dialog der Taubstummen zum interdisziplinären Gespräch ; New political economy in history: from the dialogue of the deaf to interdisciplinary cooperation
The cultural turn has reached Political History; German scholars focusing on political history are trying to reconceptualise political history as 'history of the political'. They are receptive to theories, methods and concepts from other disciplines. Still, there is a remarkable desideratum in this search for theories that may be related to historical research: Theories and methods discussed in the empirical-analytical branch of political science that is systematically concerned with political phenomena are seldom discussed and applied to historical phenomena. There are however several exceptions to this rule. Some social scientists have applied rational choice theory and considerations from new political economy to history in recent years. This issue of Historical Social Research is intended to contribute to this bridging of Political Science and History. It presents case studies applying rational choice considerations (mainly new political economy and public choice theories) to history as well asmethodologically interested articles discussing chances and limits of this interdisciplinary endeavour.
